“NO ROUND, OPAQUE lighting and no powder blue,” were the only guardrails Betsy Wentz was given when renovating this Pittsburgh-area house for a family of three. She took that freedom and ran with it, pushing the boundaries of her clients’ style while preserving the home’s old-world sophistication. Using a rainbow of colors to decorate a historic home is not for the faint of heart, but Wentz gave new life to the 1901 Tudor Revival by blending jewel tones with the existing woodwork. “The original owner had a varnish company, so he brought in a team of Italian woodworkers to handcraft elaborate varnished millwork throughout the house,” she says. “The biggest design challenge was striking a balance between preserving that history while modernizing and introducing lighter, more vibrant colors.” Apart from…

It links us to our surroundings, recalling the inky sea or a cloudless sky. “We enjoy being enveloped in it,” says Dana Bergman Falcione of Bergman Vass. Her partner, Erica Vassalotti, agrees: “The color grounds us.” Greens “Colors seen so prominently in nature are timeless,” says Kristen Peña of K Interiors. Verdant shades are serene but exciting, creating a versatile background for gathering spaces such as kitchens and living rooms. “WE USE A LOT of what I call ‘muddy colors,’” Alison Giese says of her namesake design firm’s signature palette. To establish tailored but cozy interiors for a young family’s newly constructed, ranchstyle residence in San Antonio, Giese once more relied on “color that’s not colorful.” The way she sees it, “If it’s blues and pinks and greens that have a lot of brown in them, then they become more of a neutral.” The four-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bathroom house is laid out in a “boomerang shape,” Giese says, and is poised to be the family’s “legacy home,” a place to be enjoyed by many generations.
