Barcelona, Spain Seven Lives, an apartment block on a small infill site in Barcelona, was designed to adhere to the area's building regulations, which specified materials and colours. There's a beautiful duality to Bangkok. One side is the city's freneticism, as I experienced on an early morning walk through the markets, where vendors hawked the likes of pungent durian fruit and piles of purple mangosteen, which stain your fingers as you delve into their sweet centres. I slowly wind my way up to Spioenkop Wines, perched atop a koppie in the rolling Elgin countryside, over the Kogelberg mountains. It's named after the site of an Anglo-Boer War battle in KwaZulu-Natal, which bears a striking resemblance to this craggy outpost just 11km shy of the Overstrand coastline. As I arrive for the evening, the last golden rays of the day lap at the sides of the surrounding terraced hills, indigenous grasses sway gently in a breeze with rain on its tongue. Sometimes it takes a true architect's vision to imagine what a small, neglected property could become. In this case it must have helped that Alberto Sánchez and Aina Salvà – the owners of this totally transformed, light-filled family home in Palma, Mallorca's capital city – are both architects. This was no cosmetic update to an existing structure that already featured thought-out spaces or ‘good bones’. Travelling with a cabin suitcase is always a good idea. Moving house with almost the same amount of luggage, even better. Or at least that's what Jam and Raquel thought when they decided to change homes with little more than the essentials. My trip to Jaipur was inspired by a photo that one of my favourite photographers, Pia Riverola, took of the Jantar Mantar in Delhi. A jewel-red building that looked like a giant kaleidoscope and awoke the fancy in me to venture to India. I was able to entice my mother, a textile artist, to join me on this adventure, with the allure of all the beautiful hand-spun cotton and linen that Jaipur has to offer.
