Exclusivity has always defined luxury – and in turn, luxury brands have come to dictate what consumers should possess in order to unlock or maintain a certain status. But now a trend has emerged in which consumers desires have little to do with labels, or even with premium prices, simultaneously the world’s gaze has fallen on the African continent, where makers are not simply creating products for the sake of conspicuous consumption; they are developing collectable, bespoke items and brands around experiences. Mawande Ka Zenzile is an artist’s artist. Singular, driven and, to echo his words, constantly in conversation with himself. Despite his illustrious academic credentials, having completed an MAFA at UCT’s Michaelis Art School, he remains dedicated to his natural affinity for ideas and objects. 1 whole yellowtail (1-1.5kg), cleaned Coarse sea salt and ground black pepper 1 large lemon, thickly sliced 1 large fennel bulb, thinly sliced 125ml dry white wine Extra virgin olive oil Boiled new potatoes in garlic butter, to serve Lemon wedges, to serve Preheat the oven to 200°C. Season the inside of the yellowtail’s belly cavity with salt and pepper and add the lemon slices. Rub the skin of the fish with olive oil and season it. Scatter the sliced fennel into a roasting dish and pour the white wine into the base of the dish. Place the fish on top of the fennel and cover with a lid or foil. From month to month the Johannesburg-based retailer shares envy-inducing snapshots from the far-flung places she journeys through to bring her shop, called The Storer, to life. 200g fresh Cape gooseberries, washed 100g sticky brown sugar 50ml single malt whisky Place the gooseberries, sugar and whisky in a heavy-bottomed saucepan over a medium heat and stir to dissolve the sugar. Cover the saucepan with a lid and reduce the heat. Leave the mixture to cook for 10 minutes or until the gooseberries have burst. Remove the lid, stir the mixture and leave to simmer and reduce for a further 15 minutes – be careful not to let it burn. Once the compote has reached a syrupy consistency, remove it from the heat and leave to cool to room temperature. Serve with a cheese platter or drizzle over ice cream. 15ml wild rosemary leaves 50g salted butter, at room temperature 1–2x200g T-bone steaks Olive oil Coarse sea salt and ground black pepper Steamed greens, to serve Combine the wild rosemary with the butter and season to taste. Line a small dish or ramekin with plastic wrap and spoon in the butter mixture. Cover and refrigerate. Rub the steaks with olive oil and season. Heat a skillet over the coals or on the stove. Place the steaks in the hot skillet and cook for 2–3 minutes on one side before turning over and placing the butter on the cooked side. House and Leisure’s collaboration with South Africa’s leading creatives continues this month with a special collection of cutlery designed by the talented Tinsel family – a collective of jewellers based in Johannesburg operating out of the Tinsel Gallery. The collective is made up of historian and silversmith Geraldine Fenn (1), Eric Loubser (2), Sirkel’s Jan Bekker (3) and Eric’s mother Liz Loubser (4) of Studio Loubser. Using silver, precious stones, titanium and copper they have reimagined what a table’s eating tools could look like, and the results are simply breathtaking. House of Vans events are well-known around the world for their colourful celebrations of street culture, and heady interdisciplinary mashups of art, food, music and design. And true to form, the brand’s most recent popup – in downtown Johannesburg – took the city by storm. For three days the festival’s art installations, exhibitions, skating demonstrations, musical performances and design stands restored life to the tin buildings at 1 Fox in a manner reminiscent of how these sheds must have pulsed with life during the gold rush itself. 1 brown onion, peeled and finely diced 30ml butter, for frying 2 sprigs dune sage (or regular sage) 150ml dry white wine 250ml fresh cream 3 large cloves garlic, crushed Coarse sea salt and ground black pepper 4kg fresh mussels, cleaned Lemon wedges, to serve Crusty baguette, to serve Place a lidded casserole over medium heat and sauté the diced onion in the butter until translucent. Strip the sage leaves from their woody stalks and add to the dish. Simmer the mixture for another minute, then deglaze with the white wine. Reduce by half and then add the cream and the crushed garlic. Season to taste, using a moderate amount of salt and black pepper. Reduce heat to medium and place the mussels in the sauce.
