Design, in general, is a strange concept to get your head around. It relies on so many abstract components and it’s so difficult to decide objectively if it’s ‘good’ or ‘bad’ – or maybe it’s just difficult for me. I have sat with my peers in many sad and uninspiring convention centre back rooms during design fairs, figuring out who did something new this year, who did it better and what innovative design consists of at the moment. There’s the whole question about design answering a brief, and the issue of whether design can make the world a better place, but I’m more interested in beautiful design or inspirational design. PHILISA ZIBI Jeweller A graphic sensibility and carefully practiced eye for interesting metal combinations have put Philisa Zibi’s Ma’art Jewellery line on the map, with it featuring on major creative platforms around the world including International Jewellery London. Zibi made her mark on the creative scene with a range of silver spoons she created for The Collection Studio in Port Elizabeth, and was one of Design Indaba’s Emerging Creatives in 2013. Now she’s producing covetable jewellery in between completing a degree in Jewellery Design and Manufacture at the University of Johannesburg. ‘Craft is critical in my practice,’ Zibi says, adding that she explores her past and the skills passed down to her through generations in her work. ‘To me, great art is enhanced by the skill of craft, which is…

Rows of graphic prickly pears, a pair of ceramic watchdogs, a cluster of retro sconces and a glass cabinet brimming with vintage cameras – all before you’ve stepped beyond the lobby. This is the kind of quirk that one has come to expect from the design dynamite behind Kirsten Goss Jewellery. Kirsten admits that she took on the transformation of this home with the same out-of-the box intentions as she has when fitting out a new shop. Capturing views of the Constantiaberg mountains by clearing the garden and shifting the bearing of the house proved to be the making of this home. ASIAN SEARED SALMON WITH GRAPEFRUIT, PAK CHOY AND NOODLES For the marinade 2T honey ⅓ cup soy sauce 2T lime 2cm knob fresh ginger, grated 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 1 small red chilli, to taste 400g skinned salmon fillets Olive oil Sesame oil 200g egg noodles ¼ cup toasted sesame seeds 2T sesame oil 100g baby pak choy, halved 1 grapefruit, peeled and segmented For the dressing ¼ cup soy sauce 2T honey 2T lime juice 2T sesame oil Combine the marinade ingredients and marinate the salmon fillets for 30-60 minutes. Long before Afrofuturism existed in our lingo, Congolese artist Bodys Isek Kingelez built his own African utopia into being. His ‘extreme maquettes’ morphed paper, plastic and building rubble into sculptural cityscapes that today, four years after his passing and some 40 years after his original piece, are becoming the subject of global acclaim. The first major international retrospective of the artist’s work, Bodys Isek Kingelez: City Dreams, showed at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City in 2018, and an extensive catalogue of the exhibition is available for purchase online at the MoMA store. famed cultural studies theorist Stuart Hall once asked, ‘What is the black in black popular culture?’ Writing several decades ago, Hall’s question would re-emerge time and again as black – and particularly African – creatives struggled to find a space of their own and a language to express their particular experience of being alive. For artist, author and Oxford University professor Samson Kambalu, the beginning of exploring these questions comes with an acceptance of a uniquely African perspective, which does not always adhere to our linear ideas of time, space and form. There are few African architects who don’t count the late Portugal-born, South African-trained artist, sculptor and architect Amâncio d’Alpoim Miranda Guedes – more commonly known as Pancho Guedes – as an important design influence. Guedes’ Coleman House in Forest Town, Johannesburg, is one of a handful of homes designed and built by him in the city, resulting in it being regarded as a treasure of South African Modernist architecture. The multilevel property was commissioned in 1984 by struggle veterans Audrey and Dr Max Coleman after their youngest son had studied architecture under Guedes’ tenure at the University of the Witwatersrand’s School of Architecture. In the leafy Johannesburg suburb of Parkview, a three-level, 3 480m² property has been transformed into a monument to Mid-Century Modern design by its new owner, Lezanne Viviers. Just six months after completing the renovation of her Hyde Park apartment, the former creative director decided to move into the abode, which was designed by German architectural firm Osmond and De Kock and built in 1960. But the property isn’t just Viviers’ new home: it’s her flagship space Lotus House, from where Viviers has launched her eponymous fashion label. Included in the property is a collaborative working studio section, a concept store offering a selection of rare finds, a gallery of contemporary local art, a garden for Japanese tea ceremonies and an atelier for fittings. Although I’ve never met him, I feel close to Brett Murray. His work is always an evocation of the present and future; a prescient commentary on the beloved country. But it’s not only for that reason. In 2012, he and I and City Press, the newspaper I edited at the time, were umbilically tied. City Press had published a review of Murray’s exhibition, Hail to the Thief, and all hell broke loose. The paper had run an art review of the exhibition and used the image of ‘The Spear’, featuring then-president Jacob Zuma as Vladimir Lenin, but with his penis exposed. In the fashion of so many modern concrete edifices today, greenery cascades down the facade of the four apartments that make up this architecturally significant building. But this block isn’t just another conception of a young landscaper keen to bring a touch of verdancy to Cape Town’s urban jungle. Erected in 1971, it was one of the first additions to Claremont’s suburban scene that smacked of Le Corbusian modernism. Distinctly right-angled and deceptively simple in structure, it was perhaps considered by residents of the stately neighbouring homes to be an unwelcome display of the avant-garde in this predominantly neoclassical setting. ‘You can just imagine it: in the middle of Claremont, with all the Victorian houses, this spaceship has landed,’ says homeowner Ruben Rossouw, who moved into the abode just two…
