BUTTER CHICKEN Our family’s favourite dinner is butter chicken (known in our house as Butt of the Chick). It’s so much loved that any leftovers are eaten for breakfast the next day. When it comes to the architecture of our buildings, we are our worst bridezilla client,’ says fashion designer Malcolm Kluk who, together with his business and life partner Christiaan Gabriel Du Toit, has been creating prêt-à-porter, bridalwear and couture for almost two decades under their label KLûK CGDT. My house is as much an expression of myself as my style is,’ says Sanet Coetzee, the creative visual merchandiser who calls this Oranjezicht abode home. ‘I think my style is quite eclectic,’ she adds. ‘I like to combine classic with contemporary and a touch of vintage. There’s something almost absurdly lovely about a stone house standing sentinel over a long-established garden. Shaded by a vast pin oak, this beautifully proportioned 1906 home is serenely inviting. Cinga Samson doesn’t read the hundreds of reviews celebrating his paintings around the world – nor does he plan to. His job is to work, he says, to reflect and to create artworks that represent his sense of self, led by his desire to treat his audiences to rare, dynamic depictions of beauty. Born in 1986, the self-taught painter has a history deeply entrenched in the arts. From a childhood interest to a chance artistic ‘adoption’ by artists Luthando Laphuwano, Xolile Mtakatya and Gerald Tabata, Samson found his way toward oils, his chosen medium. The work that Katy Taplin and Adriaan Hugo have created for Dokter and Misses has always had an edge. The Johannesburg-based duo emerged on the local design scene in 2007 with a collection of clean-lined decor accessories and furniture made from powder-coated sheet metal in primary colours. They reflected an aesthetic the brand itself accurately describes as ‘Bauhaus meets Dr Alban’. That early promise has more than paid off: in the past decade, Taplin and Hugo have progressed from being promising young designers to a force to be reckoned with. Michele Throssell of the eponymous interior design company and her husband, Bruce, fell in love with, bought and renovated a three-bedroom flat in Killarney, one of Johannesburg’s original apartment suburbs. Located in the highly sought-after Rapallo building, the apartment is an ode to art, retro design and vintage and romantic sensibilities. It almost feels like an extension of the Rapallo itself, which was built in the 1950s by Italian prisoners of war and features an original Art Deco water installation and Picasso-inspired oil painting by Armando Baldinelli in the entrance hall. Working with an historically important building can be a daunting task, often requiring decisions that could alter the future of the property forever. But when done correctly – as in the case of Castle Ridge house – the old and the new can celebrate each other, and start a new chapter in the property’s story. SPICY LENTIL SOUP 1T coconut oil 1 onion, finely diced 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 4cm knob fresh ginger, peeled and grated 2cm knob fresh turmeric, peeled and grated (or 5ml powdered turmeric) 1T korma curry paste 1t ground coriander 1t ground cumin 1 cup dried yellow pea lentils (pre-soak in water to reduce cooking time) 2 medium tomatoes, chopped 1 cup coconut milk 6 cups chicken or vegetable stock ½ cup yoghurt, to serve Fresh curry leaves, lightly fried, to serve Heat the oil in a pot and sauté the onion, garlic, ginger and turmeric for 5 minutes or until the onion is soft and translucent.
