The same-same facade of Jonathan and Claire De Gouveia’s home in a complex in Rosebank belies the modern-minimalist interiors beyond. As you step through the front door, light streams in from large windows that frame the small garden at the back. An uncluttered interior, smooth lines and muted palette belie the fact that this is a family home, inhabited by a two- and fiveyear old. So, it is perhaps unsurprising to learn that Claire is an interior designer by profession, working independently, but also collaborating with The Home Studio in Cape Town. BIG IDEA INDOOR-OUTDOOR In order to enhance the flow between indoors and outdoors, transforming the courtyard into an extension of the home was mandatory. This space is now one of the best features of the home, and provides respite when the wind is raging. When Greg McFarlane first happened upon this neglected house in Misty Cliffs outside Cape Town, it was a warren of terraces, overgrown creepers and indigenous plants. Acquired in 1969 by Sir Mordaunt Milner, Natte Valleij farm has remained in the Milner family ever since. It was Sumari, the wife of Sir Mordaunt’s grandson Alexander, who conceived the idea to reinvent the homestead’s silos into something magnificent. ‘There is so much family history on this farm. Alexander was born here, and we’ve lived here together since we married in 2010,’ Sumari explains. ‘While we were renovating the Waenhuis (wagon house) on the farm – to make way for our growing family – I sat on the steps staring at the silos and said to Alexander, “I want to do something with these silos”,’ she recalls. ‘He laughed, shook his head, and said “can we please just finish the house first!”’ At that stage, the structures were home…

BIG IDEA ART OF GLASS ‘The big idea in the kitchen area was to link the indoors and outdoors using glass and new windows,’ says architect Jürgen Kieslich. When Cape Town-based architect Jürgen Kieslich was approached to reinvent this Llandudno home, he immediately called on celebrated interior designer Etienne Hanekom to work on the project with him.
