#MYJOBURG Philippe van der Merwe of Tonic Design – who created this home’s crisply contemporary interiors – calls the setting of the house ‘a Joburger’s paradise’. It’s a Randlord mansion originally built in 1910 for mining magnate Alfred Beit’s Central Mining and Investment Corporation, set majestically on Parktown Ridge. As a result, it exemplifies old Joburg, with sweeping lawns and a terraced garden that afford beautiful views over Johannesburg Zoo and beyond. While the abode has a fine pedigree, Van der Merwe’s task as interior designer was very much to reinterpret its features, working closely with the modern, tech-savvy, design-forward family who had moved in. Van der Merwe had worked on the interiors of their previous home, which was an LA-inspired Mid-Century Modernist gem, perhaps more party pad than family…

There’s a magical street in Parktown where the steep, rocky ridge commands some of Joburg’s most spectacular views. In the early ’70s, renowned architect Peter Rich and his wife Diane bought a property here – a 1918 cottage with a precipitous terraced garden, its stone walls hewn from the neighbouring quarry. ‘What we bought was an Arts and Crafts spec house,’ explains Rich, ‘and we grafted on a whole new wing.’ Completed in the mid-1980s, the now double-storey space serves as their home as well as housing Rich’s architectural practice. Founded in 2014 by Coenraad Sutton and Linel Louw, the agency has distinguished itself in the Johannesburg creative landscape by specialising in holistic brand development. For the past seven years, Joburg’s growing passion for Mid-Century Modern design has been satisfied (at least in part) by the unique collection of pieces at Mødernist in Parkhurst, and now the little-corner-shop-that-could is sizing up – and branching out. The new space – located just a few blocks down from its original spot on Parkhurst’s 4th Avenue ‘strip’ – encompasses two floors of what was a 1950s electrical store on the corner of 4th Avenue and 6th Street, and is filled to the rafters with even more of Mødernist’s covetable products and fittings. The BMW i8 Roadster is seriously eye-catching – what’s not to love about its beautifully sculpted lines and ‘butterfly’ doors, for example? And while there’s much to admire in terms of pure aesthetic appeal, the design of the car’s wedge-shaped body has functional purposes, too. The low, sloping roofline swoops downwards at the rear to (almost) meet the high wheel arches. And of course there’s a reason these two body parts don’t quite line up: the gap created between them allows for air to pass through, creating better aerodynamics.
