What is luxury in 2018? Melanie Stockl and her late husband Martin took a leap of faith when they purchased a penthouse in Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal, unseen. ‘When this apartment came up but had to be bought without viewing, we took the plunge, knowing that we could work with whatever was there,’ says Melanie. LED 2 cups fresh blueberries, keeping a few aside for garnish 1 cup sugar ¼ cup water 1T lemon juice 1×2L tub of store-bought vanilla ice cream In a pan, stir the blueberries and sugar into the water and lemon juice, and simmer on low heat for 20 minutes until the blueberries are soft. Transfer to a blender and pulse for 1 minute until smooth; set aside to cool completely. Remove the ice cream from the freezer, allow it to soften (about 15 minutes), then mix until it reaches an even consistency. I was born in Durban, grew up in Kimberley and then moved to Cape Town for my matric year. I am a bit of a gypsy. I own a business called Granny Goose that manufactures down and feather bedding, as well as high-end linen. In 2015, London’s Victoria and Albert Museum held an exhibition titled What is Luxury? in which the institution of decorative arts and design interrogated ideas about luxury, its production and future. The exhibition included objects that showed ‘huge investment in time and skill by their creators, as well as projects that investigated social, material and economic networks challenging thinking about the future of luxury’ – their words, not mine. Although many may have expected to see expensive cars and pieces of jewellery on display, instead viewers were faced with objects such as a mechanical watch and fine lace embroidery. just love the intensity of a small space,’ John Jacob Zwiegelaar insists with such enthusiasm, it is clear he’s most passionate when talking about his work. Somehow the orchid fraternity got hold of me,’ smiles sculptor Nic Bladen. It may sound like a plot twist in a floral conspiracy novel, but this was perhaps the turning point in his career. While making a living creating jewellery, he was asked by the president of the local orchid society to cast a few whole orchids in bronze. A former dental technician, Bladen learned about bronze sculpture under the watchful eye of Otto du Plessis at Bronze Age before going out on his own. He’d been loping along when the orchid request came. ‘I cast a flower one day and that was it.
