Originally a diamond-polishing facility in Joburg’s diamond district in the CBD, Hallmark House was designed in the 1970s by architect Greg Cohen for developer Mark Markovitz, who would go on to build his own empire across the United States and Israel. Markovitz was still the owner of the building 45 years later when developer Jonathan Liebmann approached him, wanting to buy it. ‘It’s quite unusual,’ says Liebmann. ‘I normally buy buildings from people on their fourth or fifth cycle. I love the idea of preserving the character of a building while reinventing it in a contemporary way. My favourite places are renovations of historical structures and sites that have been reinterpreted by some of the world’s most cutting-edge architects. Even Trappist monks in the Czech Republic want to add a modern aesthetic to their ancient monasteries. After seeing photographs of architect John Pawson’s Calvin Klein store on New York’s Madison Avenue – and thinking that its tables looked like altars – the monks commissioned him to recreate the Abbey of Our Lady of Nový Dvůr in Bohemia. For five years, one of the Cape Town Art Fair’s missions has been to showcase emerging art in Africa and its diaspora while developing a healthy South African art market. Under the direction of new chief curator Tumelo Mosaka, the vision has become more focused – to make Cape Town a global, singular destination to showcase cutting-edge contemporary African art. Mosaka began his curatorship at this year’s fair by presenting Unframed, an innovative section dedicated to large-scale sculptures and interactive installations. ‘We felt the need to offer a viewing experience that went beyond the booth – something that couldn’t easily conform to conventional presentation,’ he says. When a South African with French heritage and her husband, a doctor and healthcare expert of Chinese descent, decided to renovate, it’s no surprise that the result would be unusual. Anina Malherbe-Lan and Dr Michael Lan had been searching for a city space in Cape Town featuring two separate entrances and sufficient room to combine their home and Michael’s wellness centre and Tai Chi studio on a single property – and a traditional Victorian house in Oranjezicht that had fallen on hard times proved to be the unexpected solution for their blended home. ‘The house had six bedrooms and bathrooms. As the little black dress is to fashion, so dark plants add a sense of depth and intrigue to the outdoors. Growing up in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape, Francois Knoetze was first introduced to the world of theatre, art and music through the annual National Arts Festival (NAF). Throughout university, he developed his own artistic practice in a multidisciplinary direction, working fluidly between sculpture, video, performance and digital art. His interest in the relationship between material and social histories has led to work that explores the objectification of people through the personification of discarded objects. Architect Pieter-Ernst Mare’s Johannesburg apartment might be in the heart of Sandton’s CBD, surrounded by the massive reflective glass forms of the corporate headquarters, hotels and shopping centres that characterise Africa’s richest square mile, but you’d never guess it.
