When GUILD opens in Cape Town’s dynamic new V&A Waterfront Silo district in June, the 450m2 flagship space will offer a portal to an inspirational world of design, art and lifestyle. Brainchild of The Guild Group founders Trevyn and Julian McGowan, the venue reflects the couple’s 14-year history of growing the local industry and working with important design voices in South Africa. Krynauw a company driven by the collaborative efforts and dreams of a team. Our work is unique, ranging from furniture to collective pieces and, more recently, architecture. Inspired by our own patented manufacturing method, we strive to innovate and expand SA’s manufacturing sector. The dream of our first building, the Chapel, can be traced back to Madola Farm just outside Piet Retief, where my father originally started with a plantation of eucalyptus saligna trees and passed on his love of woodwork to me. The Chapel was designed by our in-house architectural technologist Gideon Pieterse, developed and executed by the David Krynauw team and made from saligna timber that was grown, cut and cured on the farm. Standing where I am today is a good place to look back to where it all began, and at the golden thread of a desire for philanthropy that connects the now to the then. I started out as an avid acquirer of contemporary art, and soon became increasingly interested in researching – sometimes the word ‘searching’ seems more appropriate – that art. I was drawn in deeper and deeper, eventually becoming an advisor to many collectors and spending 13 years as a commercial gallerist. PROJECT: LINEAGE CABINET Collaborators Wiid Design x Lionel Smit Connection Furniture designer and manufacturer Laurie Wiid van Heerden and famed local artist Lionel Smit first collaborated three years ago on a signature Wiid Design bench that was shown at GUILD 2014. Painted by Smit with his highly sought-after large-scale faces, it sold before the show even opened. ‘I love being involved in something that takes me out of my usual environment and places my work in a different context,’ says Smit. ‘It makes you see the work differently.’ Following the success of their first venture, the two are currently collaborating on their third bench, having recently completed the Lineage cabinet. In South Africa’s design industry right now there is a theme emerging that relates to movement in design. Gregor Jenkin, the Feature Designer of the Year at 100% Design South Africa, is producing furniture that moves, and David Bellamy and Greg Stock are creating textiles with a kinetic drawing machine. The exhibition also features a large walk-through lighting installation that appears to move called ‘The Light Tank’ by Goddy Roodt and collaborators.
