As the curator of the Sanlam Handmade Contemporary Fair, Robi Thatcher spends her days scouting great design, food and wine. ‘It’s a gratifying job,’ she says. ‘One day I’ll be doing a gin tasting in Cape Town, the next I’ll be road tripping through the Karoo, meeting ceramicists and dining with local chefs.’ While she’s inspired by craft it’s meeting the producers that she finds really exciting. ‘I’ve got to know so many talented people over the years and it thrills me to see them all together at the HMC Fair,’ Robi enthuses. Dagmar Schumacher buys art for love not investment. ‘Every morning I look at my Matthew Hindley cat artwork while drinking my coffee and it makes me happy,’ she says. ‘I only buy art I like to surround myself with: it reflects my life. What inspired the concept? Our co-founder Lauren Gillis had a vision to change South African lives: through a simple, handmade beaded bracelet she created a vehicle to provide those from less fortunate backgrounds with opportunities for dignity, hope and empowerment. ‘A home should be a visual representation of your personality, your life and your heritage,’ says ceramicist Corlie Schoeman, whose three-bedroom townhouse in Pretoria’s eastern suburbs is home to a diverse assemblage of beloved items. Having worked as a merchandiser and stylist she has a knack for mixing colour, texture and design styles to great effect. ‘I have eclectic taste – my home is a mix of old and new, classic and contemporary. Nothing is too precious – or insignificant – to be displayed,’ says Corlie. It was her swelling sense of pride as she watched a screening of William Kentridge’s Tide Table at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art that ignited Lucy MacGarry’s art career. While she lived in San Francisco for a year the museum became a ‘daily refuge’ and the destination of countless outings. Art, she says, is ‘simple beauty and rigorous content that commands your gaze and thoughts whenever you look at it’. As this magazine has taken shape – right from the planning through to the execution, layout and subbing – I’ve felt it’s one of our strongest Art issues yet. SWEET, SYRUPY PICKLED NECTARINES 1 cup cider vinegar 350g vanilla sugar 1 star anise 1 cinnamon stick 5cm knob of ginger, thickly sliced 6 nectarines, stoned and cut into slices Parma ham, roast duck or soft cheese, to serve basil micro herbs, to serve Bring all the ingredients except the nectarines to a boil in a large pot, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Reduce it to a simmer and add the nectarine slices. Cook for about eight minutes, then remove the slices and set them aside. Bring the syrup to the boil and reduce the liquid by half.
