We seem to be having a lot of firsts lately at House and Leisure, which is making for some remarkable collector’s issues. In April we had our inaugural dedicated Kitchen Issue, in May it was Travel and now this, which is devoted to Walls and Floors. Each month’s theme is threaded throughout the magazine – including the choice of houses – with the aim of providing inspiration, fresh ideas and the lowdown on what’s new from fabrics to wine. After many years as a diver, Robin Sprong’s foray into photography was inspired by the visual bounty of the Cape’s landscapes (both above and under the water). From there he ventured into lomography, which prompted him to open photographic concept store, Exposure Gallery, at the Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock. It was his experiments with large print formats there that led to the evolution and success of Robin Sprong Wallpaper. Church Street in Cape Town might be the bedrock of the city’s established art scene but it’s made necessary space for newcomer Smith – called simply that, because its scope goes beyond mere gallery to a space for collaborations and crossover projects. Director Candace Marshall-Smith, a photographer with a finance background, sought out longtime associate Amy Ellenbogen for the role of curator. This traditional Durban North home guards its secrets well. From the outside, only elegant, soaring palms along the cul-de-sac hint at that colonial Durban sensibility. Café del Sol in Olivedale has long been one of Joburg’s best-kept secrets – a proper family-run Italian trattoria beloved by locals, and with enough of a reputation to attract diners from around the city. Nick Scott wasn’t planning to be the chef at The Great Eastern Food Bar in Melville when he opened it in early 2014. ‘I’m not a chef, but I do the cooking because we couldn’t find anyone who was willing to cook for us,’ he says. GEMSBOK CARPACCIO WITH CHÈVRE AND OLIVE OIL 800g gemsbok carpaccio olive oil salt and black pepper, to taste 200g chèvre wild rocket or micro herbs, to garnish To prepare the carpaccio, ask your butcher to cure a venison loin mildly, hang it for two days, freeze it and then slice it thinly with a slicer. WHEN May 2014 ISSUE Easy Living WHERE Pretoria Nestled in a leafy part of Pretoria East, this house needed a deep connection to nature, as homeowners Quintin and Michelle Wiehahn made protecting the site and planning around the trees a priority. So the forested backdrop was the starting point for architects Thomas and Sureen Gouws, whose design brief was to make a home that was modern, yet blended right into the sylvan setting. They introduced contemporary design to the rustic charm of a farmhouse-style build and the result is a U-shape with two barn-like structures on each side, bridged by a light, airy passage. A pencil line of smoke wisps from a brick chimney as you approach a sandy plot in Cape Town’s Durbanville. It’s coming from a corrugated-iron smallholding housing a kiln that’s hard at work. Back in 1960, before the kiln was a permanent resident, Alan Shaw saw potential in the land – it was a place to settle and raise a family, but the ground itself had potential, too. The idea of renovating a dream house seems paradoxical. If it is already your dream house how could you improve it? The answer in Gert and Leonie Steyn’s case was quite simple. Their dream home was a 1950s modernist gem in Gezina, Pretoria, set high on a rocky ridge, peeping through the treetops, but soon enough it needed a bit of maintenance. Historical houses, even modern ones, take a bit of looking after.
