THE UP! IS AN EXERCISE IN CLEVER PACKAGING THAT BORDERS ON THE MAGICAL. VW MOVE UP! The Up! is new to South Africa but won the prestigious World Car of The Year title in 2012, and I think it thoroughly deserves it. You’d be forgiven for expecting this car to be cramped and impractical, but the Up! is an exercise in clever packaging that borders on the magical. Four adults fit comfortably inside, although the back seats are better suited to children over long distances. The clever false floor in the boot means the Up! rivals much bigger cars on that front. It was by chance that Pam du Toit acquired her engaging apartment opposite Groote Schuur, the grand Cape Town home to prime ministers past. The Rondebosch block was built in the 1950s as a hotel and converted into flats in the 1980s. ‘I was delivering wallpaper there when I bumped into the chairperson of the governing body,’ says Pam. ‘I’d just sold my flat in Sea Point so I asked her if anything was available. I liked the place. A love of experimentation is built into Luke Dale-Roberts’ genetic makeup – and it’s unmistakable at his new spot Naturalis. Petri dishes and laboratory beakers line the shelves in the culinary space at The Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock, and on a long central table filled with Luke’s inventive eats, potbellied Florence flasks sit on tripod stands. Australia is unique. I first realised this 20 years ago, while I was spending a year in the land down under as an exchange student. The design of Work Shop New Town (WSNT), a new fashion market in Joburg, and The Potato Shed, the artisanal restaurant next door, posed certain questions. These had to do mostly with the rich heritage of the buildings they were to occupy and understanding the place of the market and restaurant in the dramatic, large-scale rejuvenation of Newtown. This was because WSNT and The Potato Shed are located in meticulously restored iron railway sheds dating back more than 100 years. These sheds, where produce (including, you guessed it, potatoes) was off-loaded from trains arriving from the north, provided direct access to the market behind it. The old railway tracks can still be seen where they slice through the paving and lawn between Newtown Junction and The Market Theatre precinct next…

‘I’ve always been making art,’ Jonathan Freemantle says. ‘I was about seven, in my father’s studio at home. I might have been drawing, and I was hooked. Space is a relative notion. Those who have it sometimes mismanage it, and those without it tend to make the most of every last centimetre. Given the abundance of space in South Africa, a two-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment might be the last place you’d expect to find twin toddlers. The fact that Mathew and Melissa Kieser’s charming two-bedroom, 80-square-metre apartment in Sea Point needed not one alteration – bar a fresh coat of white wall paint – was a serious coup, considering it’s in a 1920s Art-Deco heritage block. BLACK BEER BREAD 100ml stout beer 4t blackstrap molasses 1t instant yeast 1t black gel-based food colouring (optional) 250ml tepid water 500g plain bread flour 1t salt 1t olive oil 2T caraway seeds 250g salted butter, softened Combine the stout, molasses, yeast, food colouring and water in a bowl.
