These diseases include West Nile Virus, and Eastern and Western Equine Encephalomyelitis (EEE/WEE). Anticipation is something that many horses struggle with, and it can be a difficult problem to solve if you don’t address it immediately. When your horse is anticipating what you’re going to do next, he becomes anxious and unfocused. He can’t keep his mind on the task at hand and starts to worry about what’s going to happen next. The best way that I’ve found to keep a horse from anticipating my next move is by always keeping them guessing. If you’re working on a specific maneuver and you keep cueing for it in the same spot each time, your horse is going to start to anticipate that spot in the arena, and might even become anxious. If you find yourself struggling to stay out of the penalty box when it comes time to perform a rollback, try going back to the basics at home and working the pieces individually before attempting to do them all at once. This drill is designed to help your horse rock back on his haunches before going into the turn, and keep him straight and on the correct lead during your lope departures. Practicing your rollback at home before it comes time to go to a horse show is important. But remember to not over-school it. The importance of environmental management to reduce respiratory irritants in the air can’t be overstated for your asthmatic horse. In fact, most experts agree that environmental control is even more important than medications when it comes to controlling equine asthma. Tip 1: Feed wisely. The most impactful respiratory irritants your horse encounters are during feeding time, when his nose is likely to be buried in his hay. Take care to monitor dust in hay and avoid hay nets or enclosed hay feeders. A pelleted diet can be an important strategy to reduce dust if your horse has severe asthma. Tip 2: Water hay. With clicker training, you’re teaching your horse to associate a clicking sound with a reward, which in the beginning is an edible treat. First teach your horse that the click sound means a treat. Click and immediately give him the treat; repeat twelve to twenty times. Next hold a stick out. As soon as he touches it, click, and give the reward. After several repetitions, he’ll learn to associate touching the object with the click and receiving a treat. You can use this method to teach him to put his feet on a specified spot, to turn his head away from you, to take a step back, and many other tasks you choose.
