MY article this week is unashamedly eulogistic – on three counts. The first, of course, is Princess Anne. Frankly it is almost impossible to over-eulogise about her Burghley performance, because it was quite remarkable by any standards.
Doubtless it would have been possible to send her, when she left school, to one of the many top riding establishments either in Britain or abroad. But no, she learnt it all by herself with, of course, the inestimable help given to her by Alison Oliver, and, I have no doubt, on occasions too by Alan.
She could hardly have had better mentors. But the hard work, the early mornings after big official occasions, the determination to learn, were all her own.
DOUBTLESS, too, she could have afforded to buy a top-class, really…
