It makes me reflect on a little-known common thread that links four of the past five eventing team Olympic gold medal winners. Think Germany in Beijing and London, and Britain in Tokyo and Paris. INTERNATIONAL and five-star event rider, coach and breeder/producer of top-quality sport horses Nick Gauntlett was keen to put five-star and Olympic mare Lissy Mac Wayer to his late four-star stallion Party Trick; a combination hoped to result in exciting and talented offspring. Following the tragic sudden death of Party Trick in 2021 as a result of an accident, his frozen semen reserves are limited and very precious. This, combined with the declining fertility of the then 19-year-old Westfalian mare made embryo production for conventional embryo transfer a challenge. Speedgate Equestrian Area Festival, Kent JEMIMA BROWN and Camarnaint Rambler, aka Barney, enjoyed two Area Festival wins, topping advanced medium 91 with 68.68% and advanced medium freestyle with 70.28%. "IT'S A MIRACLE SHE DIDN'T BREAK HER NECK" PROCEEDINGS came to an abrupt halt on the first evening after Sarah Walker was badly injured in a freak fall. She was warming up one of husband Rob’s championship contenders in the collecting ring when he tripped – throwing Sarah out of the saddle -before somersaulting and landing on her, slamming her into the surface. “She landed on her face and basically degloved the bottom half of it,” said Rob. “She was taken to hospital and underwent four hours of facial surgery; even the surgeons said it was a miracle she didn’t break her neck. Pinewell Storm and Anais Bushell won the mountain and moorland (M&M) leadrein qualifier at Denbigh and Flint, led by their producer Sarah Parker. EVERY summer, sometime in July, Adam gets a call from our neighbour Simon asking if he would like a lift to the Rydal, the hound show in Cumbria. Simon is good company and his wife Mrs O makes a great picnic, so this is an excellent invitation. Also, Adam doesn’t drink so after a happy day for everyone on the lash/ looking at hounds he can drive Simon’s luxury motor back to base, having drunk nothing stronger than a Coke all day. THE Paralympic equestrian format was completely revamped for the Tokyo Games with the team competition feeling the biggest shake-up. Despite a mixed reception, the same format will be in place in Paris. THE BASICS ● Grade I is for athletes whose impairment has the greatest impact on their ability to ride and is ridden in walk. Grades II and III include walk and trot. Grade IV and V are for athletes whose impairment has the least impact on their ability to ride and include walk, trot, canter and lateral work. ● During their tests, riders can use various aids, including looped reins or the assistance of callers, to support them. AFTER suffering a fractured elbow and sepsis from a kick as a five-year-old, Hannah Rebecca Lane’s gelding Lord Cortland was given a guarded prognosis, with vets unsure whether he’d survive. But after three operations and six months of rest and rehabilitation, the now nine-year-old pulled through. The pair won the prelim bronze with 70.49% at Northallerton Area Festival. “That was my first-ever win at an Area Festival,” said Hannah. “It was quite an emotional win, especially as he shouldn’t really be here. Hurst Show Team’s exquisite four-year-old lightweight mare Tattygare Me Me Me (Poppy) belied her lack of mileage to make a clean and extremely rare sweep, lifting three hunter championships – four-year-old, lightweight and mare. A GRANDMOTHER who had only ever ridden a donkey on Skegness beach had her first ride on a horse, aged 82. Barbara Heslip, who lives in Kiwi House Care Home in Derby, had celebrated her 70th birthday by doing a parachute jump, so she felt it was time to make her riding dream come true – and she is now planning her next adventure. “Barbara had been counting down the days,” a spokesperson for the care home said. “When asked if she had ever ridden a horse, she chuckled and said, ‘The closest I’ve come was riding a donkey on Skegness beach’. Just prior to the Games, equestrian sports received overwhelming global media attention – sadly for the wrong reason with a spotlight thrown onto the training methods of dressage rider Charlotte Dujardin. Within a couple of hours of the story breaking, I appeared on Good Morning Britain hoping to provide clarity on the importance placed on welfare and the exemplary care competition horses receive. SIGNIFICANT advances have been made in equine assisted reproductive techniques over the past decade, one of the most notable being the increasingly popular intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) following ovum pick-up (OPU). WHAT IS OPU/ICSI? OPU is the first step in the process and is the procedure by which oocytes (eggs) are collected from the ovary of the donor mare. The oocytes are shipped to a specialist lab where ICSI is performed. ICSI is an advanced form of in vitro fertilisation (IVF), whereby a single sperm is injected into a mature oocyte, which is then cultured over a period of seven to nine days and may go on to develop into an embryo. The resultant embryos can be frozen and then thawed at a later date and transferred into recipient mares.…

BRITAIN has a stellar dressage record at the Paralympics and has won team gold at every Games since the discipline joined the programme in Atlanta in 1996 – but the tides are turning. In 2018 British dominance and a 22-year unbeaten streak were broken by the Netherlands who took gold at the World Equestrian Games, relegating the Brits to silver by 0.6%. At the European Championships the following year the Dutch won gold again, extending their margin of victory over the British to almost 6% this time. This was his first exposure to British Dressage competition and the seven-year-old has already qualified for the MCI (Masters Du Cheval Ibérique) GB National Championships for Iberian horses and Paul hopes to qualify him for the MCI European Championships. “He’s got great potential for grand prix – he’s already showing talent for piaffe and passage. Gordon Dressage Group at The Cabin EC Area Festival, Aberdeenshire PE TEACHER and former equestrian vaulter Hazel Gunnyeon, and her seven-year-old Welsh section D gelding Nantshan Blades Of Glory, enjoyed a double Area Festival victory when landing prelim 19 and the silver prelim freestyle, both with plus-69%.
