HEINRICH-WILHELM JOHANNSMANN THE German showjumper, trainer and former chef d'équipe of the Ukrainian team died on 19 May, aged 71. Mr Johannsmann, known as “Kaiser”, grew up on his parents’ stud farm in GuterslohEbbesloh, Germany, with three brothers. He started riding as a teenager, and took up an apprenticeship as a saddler. He then completed an apprenticeship with Olympic showjumper Lutz Gössing, and in 1978 moved to the Römersee Stud, Heiden, where he was given the opportunity to ride Gerhard Brenningmeyer's horses Sarto and Chico. Mr Johannsmann rode at the 1978 World Championships, where the German team came fifth. The following year he was part of the silver medalwinning team with Sarto at the European Championships. CAMPAIGNERS have shared frustration and disappointment at the Government's decision to scrap legislation that would have outlawed the live export of horses for slaughter. The Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill had its first reading in June 2021, but had stagnated. In April, World Horse Welfare led a ride to parliament to press for the passage of the bill and raise awareness of live export. The legislation would also have clamped down on horse attacks by out-of-control dogs. It was set to deal with livestock worrying, and make pet theft a specific offence. But on 25 May, the bill was dropped. Mark Spencer, the minister for food, farming and fisheries, blamed “political games” and “scope creep”, explaining that “the bill risks being extended far beyond the original commitments in the manifesto…

James Christopher Armour, 57, was convicted of two counts of indecent assault and rape to injury, and one of assault and rape to injury, after a trial in March. AN Irish research project has shed more light on the problem of equine obesity. If horses are too fat, they risk serious health problems like laminitis and metabolic disease. Several simple body condition scoring (BCS) systems have been developed and publicised to provide easy, objective ways for owners to monitor their horses’ and ponies’ condition. Irish vets recruited 60 owners with 60 horses or ponies and visited them in their home yards in summer. The range of equine activities was wide: elite sports horses to pleasure riding ponies. Owners were asked to assess the body condition of their horses or ponies, taught how to use a simple BCS system, and then asked to repeat the assessment.
