HORSES are part of the family, and Hapless more than most.
“He was born and died in the same field at home in Leicestershire,” says Fernie joint-master Philip Cowen.
Out of Philip’s mother’s favourite hunter Happy, he was by Hopton Lane from Richard Bowers’s Elms Stud and the last of four from Happy. Sadly, he was orphaned at birth, which led vet William Bevin to exclaim on being asked for a name: “It must surely be Hapless!”
Happy’s progeny, The Pookah, Thunderbox, Chambermaid and Hapless, were happy indeed, enjoying 1,136 days hunting proper between them, mostly with the Cowens in Leicestershire (Thunderbox was sold to the Beaufort). Hapless hunted for 17 successive seasons for more than 20 days a season with the family, mainly with Philip and his father, Joe.…
