THERE appears to be a growing trend for horses competing barefoot, highlighted by the top two finishers in the LGCT grand prix of London (see p48) competing without shoes. TRAINING SCHEME LAUNCHED BY BD BRITISH DRESSAGE (BD) is launching a nationally recognised apprenticeship. BD said it is “delighted” to announce the scheme, for all ages, which will cover practical skills and “a range of qualification pathways delivered in an equestrian setting”. Routes include leadership, digital marketing and senior groom, and training will include sessions at events, and yard visits. WOUNDS are common in the horse, and the majority are superficial and relatively minor. But appearances can be deceptive and understanding what should cause concern is important for horse owners. It is easy to think that the bigger the wound the more serious it is, but unfortunately it’s often not that simple. What is more important is what structures have been involved, and the consequences of this. TWO major injuries haven’t held back Kate Moissan’s Trakhener mare Welthausen’s Onour, who won both the advanced medium music and advanced medium silver at Speedgate. Kate has owned 15-year-old Onour since a foal. “She’s got a very interesting history,” said Kate. “As a five-year-old, she fractured her dorsal spinal processes while travelling in a trailer, which required three months in cross-ties, two years off work and months of rehabilitation. PUPPY shows come and go with alarming regularity, but to my mind 2022 will go down as a vintage year. At the kennels, kennel huntsman Jake had fulfilled his bit and then some – hounds healthy and happy, every surface swept, hanging baskets erupting with flowers and not a blade of grass out of place. Each master has their part to play and one of Adam’s jobs is to invite the judges. I’m not sure that this is his priority, but for me the ideal combo is an old judge and a young one. A RIDER who is living with terminal cancer, and who has qualified for the Summer Area Festival Championships, said the condition “will not stop me doing what I want to do, while I still can”. It’s an event that’s changed massively from 10 years ago and the organisers deserve a slot to run a future senior championship if that’s their ambition. The effort put into the ground was the obvious positive – the going was exceptional, not just good “for this time of year” or “under the circumstances”. I only rode the four-star track and it provided a great pre-Burghley run. My only criticism was a few too many drops, but with the ground as good as it was, it wasn’t a big problem. WHEN the British long-list for the eventing World Championships was released back in June, only two of the riders were potential senior championship debutants. One of them not only had a horse on the main list, but also another on the reserve list. She may not be hugely well known yet, but you should note her name – Kirsty Chabert is one to watch. SHADOW came to Newmarket Equine Hospital (NEH) as an emergency with a deep wound to the thigh region, which had happened as a result of an accident with a motorcycle while out hacking. He had been attended by a local vet who administered first aid and, crucially, stopped the bleeding from the wound by clamping off a damaged blood vessel. The wound was assessed further at NEH, identifying a deep laceration involving the muscles in the thigh region and a fairly major vessel, which was still bleeding profusely if the clamp was removed. Control of the bleeding was prioritised – the wound was cleaned while the clamp was kept in place, and subsequently the vessel was ligated (surgically tied up).
