THIS time of year is always hard – as guest columnist James Fisher puts it (p16), you have to “grin and bear it until the birds start singing”.
But this time it’s more than dark mornings, muddy gateways, frozen drinkers and hoof abscesses that are taking resilience to overcome. The situation remains dire for riding schools unable to open their doors, with only a glimmer of hope that some may be able to get something from their insurance (news, p5).
Anyone looking to import or export horses is facing additional paperwork, uncertainty and costs – and those costs are currently particularly significant for those who are buying (news, p4).
