A STEP back can sometimes result in a leap forward, as in the case of lofty warmblood mare Aberllanerch Muddy Puddle.
“At 17.2hh, she’s a lot of horse to balance,” said Stephen Allen, who rides eight-year-old “Lola” for Helen Bodmer. “We did a couple of elementaries last year, but she started losing confidence in the canter work. We decided to work at home to improve the consistency of the canter, before bringing her out again at prelim.”
Patience paid off, as Lola scored a prelim gold section double at Checkendon EC, Berkshire.
“She’s very laid-back, but if something really flusters her there’s no middle ground,” added Stephen, a former professional rider who now works in construction.
“When she is confident in the work, I think she’ll fly through the grades.”…
