THE loss of the FEI Classics prize money is “very sad” but could be a reflection on the way eventing is changing, a previous winner said.
The FEI has confirmed that after this season, the Classics will not continue in its current form.
“It’s very sad to lose these series that have become very prestigious,” 2011 Classics winner Mary King told H&H. “But I can see if there isn’t sponsorship, it’s impossible to run. It’s a shame but time does move on.”
The series, which has been running since 2008, includes the six CCI4* events: Badminton, Burghley, Kentucky, Luhmühlen, Pau and Adelaide. Riders are awarded points for wins and places, with a top prize of $40,000 (£30,700) each season.
