The Lady Dior As Seen By exhibition was the focal point of the Dior booth at Art Basel in Hong Kong. Dior enlisted contemporary Chinese artist Li Shurui this year to riff on the subject of the maison’s iconic Lady Dior bag. She unveiled Idolatry, an eight-minute video installation. Two screens play images depicting a text conversation between two people via social media. Although the images appear to be digitally generated, they are in fact hand-painted and photographed by the artist to highlight the conflict between digital and handmade products. Given La Prairie’s White Caviar Illuminating Pearl Infusion and White Caviar Crème Extraordinaire, two of the Swiss skincare brand’s best-known products, enhance and illuminate the skin, it seemed fitting that La Prairie partnered with contemporary artist Chul-hyun Ahn for its exhibition in the Collectors Lounge at Art Basel in Hong Kong. The South Korean specialises in illumination, and light is his sole medium. In 2007, legendary investor Warren Buffett made a US$1 million bet with hedge fund investment firm Protégé Partners. The Sage of Omaha, as he is sometimes known, predicted that an investment in a simple, low-cost S&P 500 index fund would outperform a hand-picked portfolio of hedge funds, after fees and expenses, during the next 10 years. Fine art photographer Stephen King, whose striking images of dramatic landscapes are keenly sought by collectors around the world, has once again been honoured in the Travel Photographer of the Year (TPOTY) awards. Stephen’s photo Creation, pictured left, was commended by the judges in the Hot/Cold Single Image category of the 2018 edition and selected to appear in the TPOTY exhibition, which took place in London last month. The opening of the seventh annual edition of Art Basel in Hong Kong had the crowd of art lovers at the Convention and Exhibition Centre abuzz. With a stellar line-up of galleries—242 of them—and an ambitious programme of powerful films and hard-hitting talks, there was plenty to keep visitors of all persuasions enthralled. The fair was divided into seven sectors—Galleries, Discoveries, Insights, Kabinett, Encounters, Film and Conversations. Louis Vuitton enlisted interior designer Joyce Wang, our March cover star, to reimagine the scenography for an exhibition of its growing Objets Nomades collection at the Central Magistracy, Tai Kwun. Joyce’s clever design had the grand architectural space resembling an avant-garde home. Objets Nomades is an ever-expanding line of collectible items created by an array of international design talent, including Hong Kong’s André Fu, Brazil’s Campana Brothers and Japan’s Tokujin Yoshioka.
