There may be a millennium or two between the advent of ink painting and that of virtual-reality technology, but California-born, Hong Kong-raised artist Chloe Ho marries the two in her coming exhibition. amson Young is a classically trained composer, but he didn’t get his big break in a lofty opera house or concert hall. Instead, his career began in the muddy no-go zone between Hong Kong and Mainland China, where he recorded the buzzing of the border fence and the flow of the Shenzhen River. To anyone else, these tapes would be mere background noise. But Young had a plan. Vicky Xu was still in school when she started collecting rare books. “My father was a teacher of Chinese history, so I learned a lot from him from when I was very young,” Xu says. “I was with my father travelling to Xian when I collected my first old book. It was a vintage copy of one of the four big famous novels in China, called Shuihu Zhuan (Water Margin), and my father helped me choose it.
