For more than a century the animal kingdom has captivated the imagination of Van Cleef & Arpels, whose designers have frequently incorporated animals into the maison’s high jewellery collections. On holiday in Amsterdam in January with her son and daughter, Denise Lo stumbled on a giant gold resin reproduction of the Dutch cartoon bunny Miffy in a souvenir shop. “I immediately knew I had to have it,” Denise recalls. Launched in 2014 by the Hong Kong Adventist Hospital Foundation under the chairmanship of Jo Soo-Tang, the Women of Hope Awards started as a campaign to raise awareness of the foundation’s Cancer Fund and its efforts to support underprivileged cancer patients in the city. Three years on, the event has grown to become an occasion to honour women dedicated to philanthropy and educating the next generation on the importance of charity work and serving the community. The International Antiques Fair, the biggest antiques show in Asia, returns to the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from May 26 to 30 for its 10th edition. SIGHT FOR SORE EYES If you’ve ever had your eyesight tested, you’ll remember the bulky, fragile equipment the ophthalmologist used. It’s not something that can be thrown in a backpack and moved from place to place easily. But software developed by British ophthalmologist Andrew Bastawrous in Kenya—Peek, short for Portable Eye Examination Kit—enables a smartphone to be used to test eyesight, making it possible to extend high-quality, inexpensive eye care to residents of even the most remote areas. During a nine-day clinical trial of Peek in Kenya, the 36-year-old eye doctor and his team screened 21,000 people, diagnosing 900 cases of visual impairment for treatment.
