THE most effective way to change the feel of a space is to play with the lighting. It is also one of the easiest things to do, as it does not need to be invasive or expensive and is just as doable in a rental as it is in a home that you own. ■ Create pools of light, rather than just blasting a whole room. PRE-COLUMBIAN ARCHITECTURE In 1492, when the Spanish sailed into the New World, they had no idea that they were about to stumble upon not just one but many highly developed civilisations. Here, interior designer Stéphanie Coutas chose sawn oak wood on simply executed wardrobe doors that merge into the architecture. RELIEF ALL ROUND As the desire for traditional and handmade crafts in interiors grows, designers are turning to specialist painters and sculptors to create distinctive wallcoverings. Bas relief or low relief – a sculptural technique in which the design subtly protrudes from a flat surface – was used in this project by Maddux Creative, who took their clients’ collection of books, antiques, objects and art as the starting point for the light and bright library scheme. ‘We have a penchant for unusual wood species and coloured marble but will always temper these with a more modest material, such as plaster. In a quiet, suburban neighbourhood northeast of New York city, this Victorian home is starting a new life thanks to the recent renovation led by Crystal Sinclair Designs. ‘We wanted to bring the calm grandeur of the surrounding environment inside the house,’ says founder Crystal Sinclair, who is known for her bold aesthetic infused with geometric elements. This project is not the first that the interior designer has tackled for these homeowners. J. B. Interior designer Kylee Shintaffer is an expert when it comes to creative details, and the transformation of her Seattle home, which she shares with her husband and teenage daughter, brings together a refined mix of old with new. It is safe to say that not many turn-of-the-20th-century houses in Colorado feature gutsy floral curtains and pelmets, matching wall and window treatments and skirted floral lampshades, but few are lucky enough to have British design duo Nicole Salvesen and Mary Graham at the helm of their renovation. I LOVE my home in the countryside. It’s a Palladian folly that’s layered with straw matting and has room for dirty Wellington boots and all the accoutrement of woolly dog ownership. It has a notably different feel to that of my flat in the city, which is a 6th-floor apartment in central London with mirror-like, lacquer-painted walls. This is because city and country living mean very different things to me, and, I imagine, to other people too.
