Silverwares by the Danish company Georg Jensen, founded in 1904 in Copenhagen, are sought after at auction, which is where you’ll find the keenest prices for vintage and antique pieces. A silversmith and sculptor, Jensen initially focused on making jewellery for his well-heeled clientele at his varksted (workshop) on Bredgade in the centre of the city. He soon expanded into ‘hollowware’ (bowls, dishes and so on) and ‘flatware’ (cutlery and utensils) as the market for dining wares grew, and you’ll find caviar dishes, compote dishes, fruit bowls, soup tureens and sauce boats from this time, when the company produced an annual catalogue and opened shops in Paris, Berlin and New York.
