For over three centuries, Chinese ceramics have been popular with collectors and decorators, and today form a part of many classic British interiors. In recent years, strong bidding from mainland China-based collectors has produced record prices for rare pieces. Fortunately, centuries of Chinese ceramic production – and the survival of a great many objects in our homes – means that Chinese ceramics can still be found for a wide range of prices at auction salerooms. And there are still very desirable objects tucked away on dressers and up in dusty attics – at Duke’s recently, a blue-and-white vase in the style of vases made in the Ming dynasty (1368–1644) (est £100–£200) attracted a great deal of interest and sold for an incredible £16,900. In the last few decades of the 18th century, with the porcelain industry firmly established, a new phenomenon took place: the emergence of individual porcelain artists pursuing their own styles. Previously, painters worked in the factory style, often in the shadow of the artistic genius of their founders – usually following an aesthetic inspired by German or French fashion. But the factories at Derby and Worcester were run by astute businessmen, who understood that if they wanted the best artists, they had to give them recognition and the freedom to develop. Tucked away behind a hedge off the main street of a historic Sussex village, Fran Fudge’s early 18th-century house is easy to miss. ‘We bought the house three years ago. It dates from 1704 and although it looks quite small from the outside, inside it’s deceptively spacious. With three teenage children, we needed at least four bedrooms and plenty of space inside and out,’ she explains. The rarity of antique printed fabrics in a length and condition to hang as curtains or cover a sofa has made machine-printed designs copied from period textiles the main option for filling the void. Modern copies are all well and good, but what about block prints? Fabric hand printed from sets of original carved wood blocks with a known date may not offer the complete antique package, but as many blocks are more than 150 years old, this ups the provenance rating considerably. Wood block printing is the grown-up version of potato printing that children enjoy. A design is carved in reverse, colour is applied to it and the pattern is stamped onto paper or fabric. TREES The writer, conservationist, designer and socialist William Morris is possibly best-known for his wallpaper designs. He created more than 50 patterns, and most were of flowers and trees that grew wild in the countryside. Patterns should always retain an ‘unmistakable suggestion of gardens and fields’, he wrote. One of the most recognisable of all his designs is Willow Bough (1887), based on drawings of willow branches that he made at his country home, Kelmscott Manor. Most wallpaper companies these days will have at least one design depicting trees and leaves in their collection. “I love to repurpose antique furniture and bring new life to things, as I did with this 19th-century wingback armchair. It’s been meticulously and traditionally rebuilt and reupholstered. With some brilliant juggling by my upholsterer, bold C. F. A. Voysey-style Arts and Crafts crewelwork panels that I had collected from an antiques fair were made to fit to the millimetre. The outbacks of the chair have been upholstered with Howe antique saffron-coloured French linen sheets – a perfect pairing. I chose to close-stud the base (crucially with old lacquer studs for that necessary patina) to give the definition against the saffron that these chairs need, given that the crewelwork colours are so bold. Alfred is a furniture designer and maker based in Sussex. He is inspired by historic pieces and rural vernacular design, and uses traditional methods and processes. Each piece is made in his workshop on the edge of the South Downs, using sustainably sourced materials. ‘My favourite colours for interiors are currently colour blocking with greens and blues.’ Jane is a freelance homes journalist. The paintings of Blair Hughes-Stanton (1902–1981) are still very undervalued at auction so now’s the time to pick them up at affordable prices. During the 1920s and ‘30s, he was one of the most notable and acclaimed artists in Britain, known for his role in the revival of wood engraving. He studied under Leon Underwood at his Brook Green School, alongside Henry Moore and Eileen Agar, where he created works that were a celebration of love and physicality. Suffolk towns and villages have a uniquely picturesque quality, and Bildeston, where Cathy and Peter Bullen have lived for nearly 30 years, is no exception. Their house is on the high street and dates from the 17th century, ‘but at some time in the early 1800s it was given a classic Georgian façade,’ Cathy explains. Peter was in the army when the couple got married and, over the next four years, they moved seven times from base to base. ‘I absolutely hated not having a home I could call my own, so we began the search for a house that was affordable on an army captain’s modest pay, and large enough for our growing family,’ says Cathy. BUDGET: £1,500 BILL: £1,223.50 Creating a relaxing environment in your bedroom will undoubtedly help you sleep better, so put some thought into storage and lighting, as well as the decorative details. Apart from the bed, the largest piece of furniture will be the wardrobe and there are numerous options at auction, with prices as low as £50 for sturdy yet unremarkable 19th and early 20th-century pieces. Find them in darker mahogany and walnut, and lighter oak and pine, with drawers, without drawers, with mirrors and without. Be brave with colour and mix your eras. If you’re not sure what will work, Michelle Kelly recommends trying time-tested colour combinations – oranges with blues, pinks with greens, and burnt oranges with dark blues. ‘It was pale grey, almost faded out completely, a really poor scrap of paper that had been kept in a drawer at Oxburgh Hall, Norfolk,’ says David Mottershead, managing director of Little Greene, describing the discovery of Beech Nut, one of the wallpapers in the new National Trust Papers II collection. Sitting at my desk, piled high with books, papers, and a jumble of computer equipment, I can’t think of a more appealing sentiment. The Victorian and Edwardian gentry were keen on fishing, and they adored their ‘stuffed’ fish too; the perfect way to show off the one that ‘didn’t get away’. In the late 19th century, any English country house or Scottish castle worth its salt had a taxidermied salmon or pike tucked away in the boot room. Autumn wreaths are a lovely way to make use of what you can find in your garden or local hedgerows. Hang indoors or outside, with a loop of bright ribbon or simple twine Winter Foraging A winter walk wouldn’t be complete without bringing back some treasure. Collect fallen twigs, herbs, seedheads and flowerheads throughout November and December, ready for wreath-making and winter table settings. Wound together, several lengths of clematis vine make a simple and unusual rustic wreath. It is best when the clematis stems are still a little green so they can bend easily. The fluffy spent flowerheads – often called old man’s beard – are very fragile, so take care when handling. To add more seedheads, wind in a few extra stems once the wreath is finished. Autumnal…

Built from honey-coloured sandstone quarried nearby, with a roof of Wealden clay tiles and beams hewn from local oak, Bateman’s is inseparable from its surroundings. ‘To me, the house feels as if it grows straight out of the valley; it is part of the landscape,’ says Gary Enstone, curator of Rudyard Kipling’s family home. The author and his wife, Carrie, took up residence in this Sussex backwater in 1902. It was partly his celebrity that drove him to seek sanctuary from prying eyes. Kipling was in his mid-thirties and at the height of his literary fame. ‘It’s hard to comprehend now but, at the time, Kipling’s face was said to be one of the three most recognisable in the world. While the history of tea drinking stretches far back to China’s Tang dynasty (618–906 AD), British high society properly took up this pastime with gusto in the 17th century. This is partly thanks to King Charles II’s Portuguese wife, Catherine of Braganza, who was already an avid tea drinker when she came to Britain in 1662 and helped to make the drink fashionable. By the mid 18th century, with imports from the East India Company, the widespread prominence of tea meant that its price rocketed. As a result, tea became heavily taxed, which led to a growing black market for the precious leaves, and a subsequent demand for smart storage solutions. ‘Because tea was so expensive, to keep it safe, people would store it in a tea chest or tea…

It is perhaps the most infamous tale in biscuit tin history… a colourful, old-fashioned tea party adorns the lid of a classic biscuit tin. The quaint design, inspired by the work of Victorian illustrator Kate Greenaway, conjures a scene of cosy nostalgia. But a closer look at the image reveals details that are less than wholesome, from lewd goings-on in the bushes to a jar of something questionable on the table. These additional flourishes turned out to be the work of a mischievous freelance designer, but the tins reached the shelves before the offending details were spotted and production was swiftly halted. In the last seven or eight years, the wallpaper industry has changed dramatically. Many small wallpaper designers and makers have emerged on the scene, which means there are endless choices when it comes to papering our walls. It’s the result of advances in digital printing and a renewed love for pattern and colour in our homes, as well as a stronger appreciation for art, traditional craftsmanship and independent makers. EARTHBORN Cathryn Sanders is the marketing manager at Earthborn Paints. The company is dedicated to making paints that are ‘better for the planet, your home and your health’. How did the business begin? The founder of Earthborn, John Dison, was originally a town-planning professional, specialising in historic buildings. Fashion Museum, Bath Housed in Bath’s elegant Georgian Assembly Rooms since 1963 and moving to a new home in 2023, this historic dress collection started out as the Museum of Costume, but evolved into the Fashion Museum in 2007. It was founded by designer and collector Doris Langley Moore, who donated her private collection to the city. My father loved books. He was a Baptist minister whose theology and history books were ranged on bookcases he’d made. On family trips into Oxford we used to visit the booksellers together – I loved the old buildings and the smell of the books. I knew after I’d graduated with a Masters in History of Art and Architecture that I wanted to work with old things.
