The value of this monumental pottery horse, standing 43cm tall, spiralled ever upwards as bidders competed to buy it at Cheffins last autumn. Dating to 1835, the rare figure was not created for a domestic setting, but for an equestrian business – perhaps a feed store or tack shop, for their window. ‘Before the proliferation of railways and the steam engine, horses were the main mode of transport and the primary power source for industry, including agriculture and mining,’ says Brett Tryner, a director of Cheffins. ‘These models, described as ‘amongst the most striking figures ever made’ in the reference book English Earthenware Figures 1740-1840, reflect a bygone era of horse ownership.’ Traditionally, large-scale pottery horses are called Leeds Horses, but only…
