A century ago, the desk was a vital piece of domestic furniture used by householders to receive and write correspondence, plan ahead and keep tabs on expenses. Every desk needed writing paraphernalia, such as ink, nibs and stamps, and these items were kept on decorative inkstands and desk trays. This ornate desk tray and its accessories, decorated with swirling flowers, leaves and hearts, shouts quality. The piece was made some time between 1899 and 1908 in the Moscow workshop of the famous silversmith Feodor Rückert, its silver gilt body painted with intricate cloisonné enamels.
