While there are many vintage and antique pieces that are precious and need special care, there’s something really satisfying about filling your home with finds you can actually live with. Designs from the 20th century are perhaps the most practical – they are well-built, stylish and, with pieces such as telephone seats and electric lighting, are well suited to modern living. We have created seven different rooms (including a bathroom) that effortlessly exude mid-century style, from collectable kitchenalia to classic furniture, on page 44. Beads of Blue John Your magazine never lets me down on interesting things, and I’m so glad you included an article on Blue John in your May issue. As a pearl threader, I was once sent a spectacular row of Blue John 30mm beads to thread. They alternated with the dull yellow-colour beads, also Blue John. I studied Product Design at Leeds university from 2005-2008, and then decided to join my father Peter [founder and MD of Original BTC] and use my degree to design lighting. Colour has a real power. It can draw attention to something or, equally, it can make something disappear into the background. That’s why I often paint just one leg on a chair, for instance. The contrast allows all the other components – the other legs, the seat, the back, the fabric if there is any – to shine. I often liken colours to actors; you have some that are lead players, and some that are meant to play a supporting role. White is like a starring actor – which is not what I want for my work. When did you first become interested in vintage textiles? I’ve been interested in pattern and fabric since school but studied history of art at degree level and loved looking at the depictions of the interiors (and textiles), within the artworks from the Ottoman and Byzantine Empires. My interest grew as I started to travel to Mexico, Africa and India as an adult. My favourite textile is the antique Uzbek suzani that covers the ottoman in our drawing room. Family treasure Heritage Auctions’ first appearance at New York’s prestigious Asia Week – held every March – was a triumph as the Texas-based salesroom took a total of over $2.2m for its Asian Art auction. The top-selling lot comprised four ink-and-colour works on paper entitled Peony, Bottle Gourds and Loquats, Dingzi, 1917, painted by the artist Wu Changshuo. They were among 23 lots consigned from the Chenn family collection of fine Chinese paintings and calligraphy that fetched over $500,000 in total. Chen Guoxiang, a Chinese scholar (1871-1919), formed the collection in the early 20th century and the Wu Changshuo paintings were a gift to him from the artist. My dad, Martin Hanness, is an antiques dealer, who opened The Old Cinema in 1979 in a former Edwardian cinema in Chiswick, so I started tagging along on his trips to markets and began buying vintage handbags. The perfect combination of progressive and nostalgic, rattan furniture has undergone somewhat of a resurgence in 2019, with trendsetters going wild for contemporary creations by high-end designers, and curvaceous retro pieces from the 1960s and 70s. But the process of weaving from plant material isn’t new. Since ancient times, far-flung tribes and communities have used local foliage to craft baskets and seating, largely termed wickerwork. And here in Britain, we advocated the ancient art of willow weaving long before the dawn of pottery. But it wasn’t until the 18th century, during the height of the British Empire in the Far East, that expats discovered the strong and flexible rattan plant and its untapped potential for creating shapely, woven furniture. Don’t be pressured – a good dealer wants a long-term relationship with you as a sculpture buyer. Find a suitable location Good sculpture should have a presence, an effect on its space, so make sure that the space is suitable. Built-in seating can be designed to suit the space and accommodate storage for garden tools and more under the seat. Fold-up chairs are a great option as they can be hooked onto walls when not in use. If you buy garden cushions, think about how they will be stored when not in use, particularly if you have a small apartment. For atmosphere, well-behaved evergreen plants such as star jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides) can be trained around balconies, over railings and on walls. My home is an 11-bedroom Georgian country house. It’s located on the edge of a town but has country views. I fell in love with the higgledy-piggledy feel of it – the way that each room leads to another. IN FINE FORM ‘The earliest ginger jars as we know them date from the Ming period (1368-1644), and they were made for exporting salt, spices, oil, and so on, to the West,’ says BADA dealer Kevin Page. The Europeans couldn’t help but be impressed by these cargo containers – the jars were far more refined than any porcelain being produced in the West at the time. Fans may not be the status symbols or essential fashion accessories they once were, but they remain visually appealing and historically fascinating. An antique fan should be stored folded and wrapped in acid-free paper – fans left open for long periods of time may become structurally distorted and won’t close properly. If you do choose to display fans open, keep them behind glass to safeguard from dust. Rotate your collection and don’t leave a fan exposed to light for too long. Repairing a damaged fan can be complex, so seek expert advice before you embark on restoration. Whatever the age or quality, the usual rules apply: keep repairs to a minimum and only undertake restoration using reversible methods. Rattan is the material of the moment, with both international designers and high-street brands creating imaginative pieces to transition from summer to winter. And it’s a trend that’s only going to get bigger.Anthropologie (anthropologie.com) and Habitat (habitat.co.uk) focused on fashion: creating oversized rattan beds with elegant headboards and curvy outdoor chairs inspired by the 70s. At Milan Design Week, experimental Indonesian designer Alvin Tjitrowirjo (alvin-t.com) unveiled a range of colourful seating in rattan, the material of his home country.
