Do you have any tips for creating a cohesive look with different varieties of wood? Mixing woods adds texture to a room and this can be really dramatic when done right. ENAMEL ORIGINS Tough, practical and good value, enamelware is porcelain fused onto heavy-gauge steel and makes for durable kitchenware – if you drop it, it may chip but it won’t shatter. Enamelled cast-iron cookware was introduced in the Victorian era as a cheaper and robust yet light alternative to materials such as copper. While little is known of its origins in the UK, it was manufactured at the heart of the Industrial Revolution, in the Black Country near Birmingham. Staffordshire has been the heart of the ceramics UK industry since the 17th century. Several regions of the UK are intimately associated with a craft or industry – Manchester with textiles, Nottinghamshire with lace, Northamptonshire with shoes. But which region is so intertwined with its industry that it has adopted the latter as an alternative name? That would be Stokeon-Trent and its surroundings, better known as The Potteries. We recently moved to Somerset and currently live in a farmhouse with fake stone cladding. It’s pretty utilitarian and functional – we’re about to start the build of a new house. What made me fall in love with the house was its position. The sunsets and sunrises are beautiful, the views are amazing and there is a tinkling stream to play in. When George Sims started to collect mid-century furniture many years ago, he began with the basics: good wood. ‘Back then, I wasn’t familiar with the top names,’ he admits. ‘Instead, I looked out for solid, well-made pieces in teak or rosewood. I was drawn to the timber rather than the designers.’ As time went on, George became far better informed about the nuanced features of furniture from certain designers, countries and eras. I was in my final year at Leeds University reading History of Art and Italian when I got work experience at a branch of Phillips auction house. Entrepreneur Joe Kleiner set up Falcon Enamelware in the 1920s and his products were manufactured in the Black Country area around Birmingham. The company remains somewhat of a mystery as few records exist and Falcon pieces were never marked. The classic white wares with the blue rims are unmistakably Falcon, however, as this became the company’s trademark. Enamelware fell out of fashion after the Second World War when it was replaced by stainless steel, Teflon and Tupperware, and Joe Kleiner & Sons moved production to the Far East in a bid to keep going. Despite an enamelware revival in the 1960s, Joe Kleiner folded around 20 years ago. Whatever the material of your old light, safety is paramount. Never try out a newly acquired old lamp without having it tested by an electrician first. Old examples may not be earthed and original cloth-covered wires may have deteriorated. There are a wealth of flexes, sockets, shades and other fittings available through specialist outlets that replicate vintage models, and re-wiring may well be necessary. Cleaning regularly is essential, and even old wrecks can be brought back to life with a little attention. Ceramic, glass and lacquer-coated brass can be cleaned with a soft cloth dipped in mild soap and water using cotton buds to clean incised, raised or moulded decoration. Cast-iron and steel rust and so should not be exposed to prolonged contact with water, while painted finishes can easily…

What is your background? I worked in childcare before, but I’ve always had an interest in interior design. In 2004 we went to live in France with our two young children. We bought an old longère (typical French rural property) in the Loire region, which we gradually refurbished and furnished with vintage furniture bought at brocantes and vide-greniers. What made you open D’Urberville Living? I wanted to turn my love of interiors and French vintage into a business when we moved back to the UK. I had always preferred one-off vintage pieces rather than mass-produced items, so sourcing and repurposing became my passion.
