Head of Sales at Westland London, Laura Dadswell talks about her latest renovation plans ‘This year my partner and I are restoring a 16th-century thatched cott in rural age Hampshire. We bought it derelict and are slowly stripping away years of neglect to reveal the spirit of the building. How did you get into stained glass? I took art at school, up to A-level, and always regretted not taking it further. After university, although I was employed in creative environments (firstly a design studio, followed by a photographic studio), the jobs weren’t creative, and I really missed working with my hands. I was looking for an evening class, to learn a craft or skill, and suddenly remembered visiting Salisbury Cathedral and its stained glass workshop on a school art trip. Sitting in stately fashion Some when years ago, visiting some of the rooms at Kensington Palace, I noticed a chair similar to one very that I own. I think it is made of walnut with barley-twist legs and arched support. It’s a lovely chair and I’d like to have some idea of its value if I were to sell it. Several skills, including cricket ball making, gold beating and lacrosse stick making, have already become extinct through lack of use. And these losses, says Daniel Carpenter at the Heritage Crafts Association, come with a price. ‘The cost of losing crafts such as these is that our economy is now reliant on makers elsewhere in the world – which, while sad for those communities directly involved and a lost opportunity for future generations, is to some extent expected as trends come and go and practices change. I live in a flat in a Victorian terrace , at the top of a leafy square in north London with my boyfriend, Duncan. Our bedroom is favourite room my because we worked on it quite recently. It has a leopard carpet, heavy pink velvet curtains and green marbled paper walls. It’s also where a lot of my best-loved books are stacked on shelves and it has a charming view over the back garden, a church spire and trees. You can either collect antique tiles or reuse them in your home. Most Delft collectors are interested in pictorial themes, while some look for tiles that were made at the beginning of the Dutch tile industry (c1580-1600). It is mainly 18th and 19th-century tiles that are used for projects now, as they’re available in larger quantities. Letting tiles with chips or restorations be exposed to moisture is not advisable, nor do we suggest anyone to put them directly in shower areas, but you can use antique tiles on bathroom walls. Tiles in perfect condition do not need any treatment. You will find antique tiles in antiques shops from time to time. Tracks of my Tears It’s tricky to imagine the original use of these decorative vessels. In fact, they’re Iranian tear catchers, dating from the late 18th to 19th centuries. The Period: 1800 to 1910 The Source: 19th-century furniture makers The Appeal: Comfy, low-slung chairs that are popular today for bedrooms and hallways The nursing chair is a 19th-century phenomenon, part of the explosion in furniture design to meet every domestic need – in this case a comfy chair for a mother to cradle and feed her baby in comfort and privacy. Characteristically they are low to the ground, a maximum of 15in (38cm) high, and have a long, sloping back to lean against. They have no, or minimal, arms, and are usually on casters. They range from ladderback chairs to caned examples, but the majority were upholstered in velvet or needlepoint tapestry, with an oak, mahogany or walnut ‘show wood’ frame; some came with a little footstool. Teacher, cook, author and renowned florist, Constance Spry had many feathers to her bow. Born in 1886, she lived in Ireland and worked in education until 1929, when she set up as a florist in London. She thought floristry could be high art and, unconventionally for the time, she used hedgerow flowers as well as common garden greenery to create wild, free-form arrangements. Her fresh take struck a chord; by 1934 she had over 70 people on her staff and she relocated to Mayfair – signalling the start of her most influential era. Before long, she was booking notable high-society weddings, and even created the displays for Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953. Alongside floristry, Spry was also a respected cook. This beautiful picture, Kamata no umezono (Plum garden, Kamata), sold in an online auction at Christie’s, captures that special season. The woodblock print is one of 100 different prints from the famous series, Meisho Edo hyakkei (One Hundred Famous Views of Edo), created in the mid 19th century by artist Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858). I fell into the world of antiques and auctions quite by accident. A chance visit to a Cotswolds salesroom hosting a proceeds-of-crime sale of fine, early fishing tackle had me hooked at the age of 14. It was like a museum where I could handle the artefacts. My role at Halls as a general valuer and cataloguer sees me covering home-visit valuations and consignment appointments. I assist clients with valuations for probate, insurance and market appraisal, together with cataloguing across our collective and specialist sales, sale photography and exploring new avenues of business. A typical day might be valuation appointments across Shropshire and Wales, before arriving back at base to book in the day’s discoveries and starting to research and catalogue them for sale. CLASSIC OF THE FORM Constance Spry’s mantel vases may not be, on the surface at least, revolutionary. Before her designs there were svelte flowerpots made for the purpose of sitting neatly over a fireplace, but these are undeniably classics of the form, setting the mould for all that followed. Designed by Spry in the 1930s, the full set of vases consists of around a dozen main shapes. Some replicate shell patterns, while others mimic flowers, but the long, lean form of the example below makes it the most iconic of Spry’s styles. Deceptively simple in design, and available in a limited choice of colours, it feels quite of the art deco era, while also exuding a timeless appeal thanks to serpentine curves and twin-handled sides, inspired by ancient Greek forms.…

This shallow-style vessel does require some internal structure in order to hold flower stems in place. I try to use eco-friendly methods and keep plastic waste low, so I start by placing a reusable floral frog into the base of the vase (a floral frog is an object with either metal pins, which stems can be secured onto, or with holes so that stems can be submerged into it). If you don’t have one of these, you could use some chicken wire, scrunched up slightly to fit the vessel. Next, fill the vase with water, leaving a few inches from the top. Here I wanted to create a scented arrangement, so I have mixed garden roses with pink peonies and blossom from a mock orange shrub. Start with the bigger…

‘I believe in demystifying the arts and crafts and encouraging the artist in every man, woman and child. And I feel that wallpaper making and other endangered crafts need to survive as a tonic against the increasingly perfect mechanised production around us, which reflects little of its makers or its making.’ These are the words of Hugh Dunford Wood – artist, designer and one of a tiny handful of surviving UK practitioners of the ancient art of handmade wallpaper making.
