For Clare Teed and her family, Christmas Day in their Cornish holiday home is a traditional affair, following a much-loved routine that begins with stockings and ends with watching a film or playing a game. ‘We love it. The fires make it all so cosy, and the house accommodates lots of family without feeling we are on top of each other.’ It’s a far cry from their first Christmas in the house, when they camped out in draughty rooms and cooked lunch on an ancient Aga that kept going out. I fell into the auction industry by happy accident. While at university I knew that I wanted to work with beautiful art and objects in a hands-on way, and I discovered a passion for jewellery through an internship at Lyon & Turnbull. My role is very varied. I’m responsible for overseeing the goods-getting, valuing and cataloguing for each auction. ART DOWN THE AGES THE AUCTION HOUSE: Cheffins, Cambridge THE LOT: Elizabethan portrait sold on 8th March THE PRICE: £54,000 (est £15,000-£20,000) The megastar lot at Cheffins’ Spring Fine Art sale was a newly authenticated canine portrait by the Italian Old Master artist, il Guercino, which made £570,000. But a wonderful Elizabethan portrait of a lady holding a small dog didn’t do too badly either. Sarah Flynn, Head of Paintings at Cheffins says, ‘We believe that the sitter could have been one of the queen’s maids of honour, judging by her dress. Émigré Eminence Estimate £8,000-£12,000 Sold £10,000 Studio pottery by the big name ceramicists of the 20th century – Bernard Leach, Lucie Rie, Hans Coper, Ewen Henderson, Elizabeth Fritsch, Jacqueline Poncelet, John Ward and John Maltby just for starters – is hot, and buying at auction is where you’ll find the best value. Hans Coper (1920-1981), who made this small, oval-shaped vase, was a German émigré who trained with Lucie Rie in the 1940s at her London studio. Coper developed his own highly distinctive style influenced by Cycladic art that he saw at the British Museum, and created sculptural stoneware forms by throwing clay into shapes then joining two or more pieces together. The house I live in was first bought by my parents in the 1970s. They wanted a pied-à-terre in London and, as my mother was a north Londoner, Islington seemed a good place. It passed down to me after my brother and sister lived there, so the house is part of my life. The first piece of furniture that I bought was a 1960s extendable dining table, which I spent ages painting in an elaborate pattern. It eventually wore out after too many dinners! The oldest thing in my home is a 15th-century manuscript inherited from my grandfather, who was the Keeper of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum. The manuscript is small but very precious. Generally defined as any painting applied directly to a wall, murals can be traced back to the Stone Age and have increased in scale and sophistication over thousands of years. While mostly associated with grand palaces, stately homes and places of worship, murals became fashionable in the 1980s. Having been cast aside in favour of more understated wall treatments, murals are now enjoying something of a renaissance. ‘Fashion is so cyclical and the 80s are back in a big way in interior design,’ says Lucinda Oakes, a specialist decorative painter and artist. The best places to buy flowers at good prices are flower markets, which offer a broad variety of blooms. The largest flower market is New Covent Garden Market in London. While it is a wholesale market, anyone can visit and the choice is immense. There may be a flower market local to you but check it is not trade-only. Arrive early to enjoy the pick of the crop, much like antiques markets. Don’t be afraid to ask for help as stallholders tend to be happy to share their knowledge. Most traders will sell in wraps or bundles not single stems, so be prepared to buy 20 rose stems, for example. The Period: 19th and 20th centuries The Source: Welsh weavers and textile mills in Cardiganshire The Appeal: Bedcovers to be used as throws or simply collected for the sheer enjoyment of ownership Whether woven on a handloom in a cottage, or made in a mill in Ceredigion or Carmarthenshire, antique Welsh blankets offer charming striped, plaid and herringbone patterns in all sorts of colour combinations. These can be muted or vibrant, depending on whether plant dyes are used or harsher chemical aniline dyes. In the 19th century, blankets were woven on a narrow handloom and two widths were needed to make a whole bedcover. An authentic portable Zeppelin bar set by JA Henckels comes in a classic size of 31cm in height or a compact size of 23cm and can sell for thousands of pounds. It was also made in a giant size of 43cm (17in) but these are rare – one sold at Wright auctions in 2014 for $20,000. Usually nickel or silver-plated, the finish to the main body is sometimes hammered and sometimes smooth. While the main body forms the cocktail shaker, removing the nose cone will reveal an integral strainer and a hip flask with screw cap.
