I much prefer to steal a march on the season by filling vases with lots of ‘twiggery pokery’. ‘I like to gather up apple or pear twigs after I’ve pruned the trees and, once inside, they flower well before they would in the garden. ‘This is the best bit about spring for me: the way fat-budded twigs will burst into flower or leaf when you bring them indoors. The writings of 13th-century Persian poet Saadi of Shiraz are filled with references to the flower, which, according to legend, was created by the lovesick tears of a Persian youth. CONNOISSEUR’S PIECE Fit for a palace Imperial Porcelain Factory, amphora-shaped vase, 1838 This magnificent 56in high vessel was expected to attract attention when it came up for sale at Christie’s with an estimate of £150,000–£250,000, but eventually scaled even dizzier heights, reaching a final price of £692,750. The vase is of classical amphora form, decorated with gilded and scrolling acanthus leaves and palmettes. It is painted with a reproduction of ‘Smell’, from The Five Senses series by the French artist Jean Raoux. It is signed by the factory artist, ‘Meshcheriakov: 1838’ and was made for display in one of the royal palaces. Tray bien Could anyone give me any information about this small, mid-century copper and enamel dish or tray please? It seems to be a very rough version of cloisonné. It measures 20 x 10cm and came with a handmade wooden stand, indicating it had been displayed as an artwork and not used, but there’s no signature. I bought it from a house clearance in Northumberland where the owners had a selection of interesting mid-century objets d’art from around the world, including kilim-covered cushions and Tonala Mexican cats. Titanic Stories In 1912, the RMS Titanic was the largest ship to set sail, and its momentous sinking on 14th–15th April is one of the most documented in maritime history. And yet the tragedy is still surrounded by myth, controversy and intrigue. In a new major exhibition, National Maritime Museum Cornwall seeks to uncover the true stories from the Titanic disaster, which continues to fascinate us, illustrated by personal accounts, letters and objects recovered from the wreckage. Visitors can investigate the commercialisation of the ship, from the first newspapers to break the story, to the blockbuster film adaptations created years later. CERAMIC SUPERSTAR Estimate £4,000–£6,000 With the popularity of handmade 20th and 21st-century studio ceramics growing each year, the auction house is the place to find a wide variety of top makers for reasonable prices. Last December, the collection of Professor Luke Herrmann came up for sale and included wares by Bernard Leach, Shoji Hamada, Dame Lucie Rie, John Ward and, from our own times, Edmund de Waal and Julian Stair. Q: When did Scandinavian interiors start to change? A: I would say it began a few years ago. After a decade with white walls, more and more homeowners started to experiment with grey tones, which eventually developed into cool blues and greens. But one should remember that, in parallel with these shifting trends, some brands, such as Svenskt Tenn and Marimekko, have always advocated a more colourful style. ROYALS AND REVOLUTIONARIES The big names in Russian porcelain include the Imperial Porcelain Factory (IPF), Batenin, Dmitrovskiy, Gardner, Kornilov, Kuznetsov and Popov, all of whom produced a range of dining services, Easter eggs and other porcelain wares in their own style. If you’re aiming high with your collection, pre-Revolution antique pieces from the IPF in St Petersburg are especially desirable and are likely to be an excellent investment. After the Russian Revolution in 1917, the Imperial Porcelain Factory became the State Porcelain Factory and, in 1936, was renamed the Leningrad Porcelain Factory, which it remained until 1993. After Glasnost, it was rechristened Lomonosov Porcelain, and is still in production today. Wares from all eras can be found at auction.
