A true star lot My husband and I are in our mid-seventies and have been buying your lovely magazine for many years. We look forward to it being delivered each month. Occasionally we save a copy which may be of particular interest to us; one such was February 2012 in which the Auction Price Guide showed a small cloisonné vase, similar to one that we had in our cupboard. We inherited this vase from an aunt about 30 years ago. Anyone who is interested in interiors will agree that there are few things more satisfying than flicking through a new paint chart. A rainbow of raised and coloured swatches, ranging from barely-there beiges to inky, rich indigos. Little Greene has been at the forefront of the paint industry since 1773, when the Little Greene Dye Works of Collyhurst Wood, just outside Manchester, first began producing paints and dyes. Thanks to the supply of fresh running water from the rivers Irk and Irwell, both the Little Greene factory and paint trade flourished, and the owner, Joshua Rowlands, began to craft a range of coloured paints for both industrial and domestic use. Situated on the top floor of a purpose-built 1920s block in Madrid, the location of Pedro de Azambuja’s apartment couldn’t be more perfect, he says. Married to a native Madrileña, he’d been visiting Madrid for years and had always enjoyed the view onto the ‘lovely art deco buildings behind the Prado’ from the Ritz hotel. Situated on New York’s Upper West side, Nadia Ghaleb’s apartment is testament to her enduring passion for interior design and 20th-century furniture. This pair of chrysanthemum-shaped saucer dishes from the late 17th century are part of the display arranged on the tiered corner mantelpiece in Burghley’s Marquetry Room. The saucers are not among the items listed in the 1688 inventory, but were nevertheless probably bought by the 5th Earl around the same time much of the Japanese porcelain collection was acquired. HISTORY Kakiemon porcelain takes its name from the Kakiemon family, who began producing high-quality enamelled wares in the Arita district in western Japan in the mid 17th century. When civil war broke out in China, the Dutch East India Company’s lucrative trade in exporting porcelain was interrupted, and traders turned to Japan to feed the demand for exotic luxury items. KEVIN GREY Based in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, Kevin Grey’s story is an inspiring one. For 20 years he worked in the luxury automotive industry, creating bespoke items for Rolls-Royce, Bentley and the Morgan Motor Company. ‘Any drawing put in front of me had to be made, and as a consequence I never discount anything as too difficult to create,’ he says. In 2007, he changed tack, studying at the Birmingham School of Jewellery for two years before working as an artist in residence, then setting up his own practice. He cites 20th-century Scandinavian design as a big influence on his work, which includes bowls, vessels and sculptures. He combines traditional metalwork with new technology, like laser welding, and hand-forms individual strips of silver to make complex surfaces. ‘He has an…

SIR WILLIAM CAVENDISH AND BESS OF HARDWICK William Cavendish, the second of Elizabethan courtier Bess of Hardwick’s four husbands, bought Chatsworth House at her behest in 1549. It cost £600. Work started on a new house in 1552. Bess (pictured above) was fascinated by tapestries, and her renowned collection still hangs in Hardwick Hall, which became a National Trust property in 1959. A piece of needlework (above right) dating from Elizabethan times remains the only depiction of the original Chatsworth in the House. Çintamani is the name given to the abstract decorative motifs – the trio of dots and waved lines – on this record-breaking panel. It is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘auspicious jewel’ and these motifs are considered by some to have their origins in the Buddhist imagery of Central Asia, representing pearls and flames. Other sources refer to them as leopard spots and tiger stripes, an idea that could originate from the depictions of heroes in Persian manuscripts – they were often clothed in leopard skins, represented by dotted patterns. Çintamani motifs were found in furnishings and clothing, sometimes vastly scaled up, and were believed to protect the wearer and deliver physical and spiritual potency. For me, Clarice Cliff is the greatest British ceramic designer of the 20th century. She was an incredibly talented, motivated woman. Born in 1899 (which she used to lie about as she wanted to be seen as a 20th-century girl) to a very modest Stoke on Trent family, she went out to work in the potteries very early, at 13. But she was so driven. She took on a number of positions to learn her craft, and eventually settled at AJ Wilkinson’s at about 16. She rose up through the ranks, became art director, and stayed there through her peak in 1926–1936, until she sold the business in 1964. Her ‘Bizarre’ designs were groundbreaking. Whether propped on a decorative dresser or used as everyday dinnerware, first launched in 1816, Spode’s blue and white ceramic designs are synonymous with classic British antiques. Josiah Spode was born to a poor family in 1733, and was orphaned at the age of six. His pottery career began when he was taken on as an apprentice by Thomas Whieldon, who became a central figure in the development of the Staffordshire potteries. Sparking interest within the potbanks, Spode quickly moved on to forge partnerships within several other of Stoke’s thriving china factories and soon after, with funds of just £500, he set up his very own. FACE VALUE Estimate: £60,000–£80,000 This striking Egyptian granite head was the star attraction at Bonhams’ Antiquities sale in July, which offered a variety of unusual objects dating between 4000BC and the 12th century AD. Because of the sculpture’s shaven and cone-shaped head, it’s thought to depict an Ancient Egyptian priest of a religious cult, and belongs to a category of Egyptian antique sculpture known as ‘egg-heads’. What makes this such an inviting room This sitting room is located in one of the Manhattan apartment houses built c1906 and designed by the Sicilian-born, New York-based architect Gaetan Ajello (1883–1983). Essentially neoclassical in style, its clean, rectilinear style is accentuated by sliding sash windows and original parquet floor.
