One of the many pleasures of working on Homes & Antiques is that every month there is a new wealth of subjects to explore and share with you. Inspired by the current trend for global, eclectic interiors that appear to contain exotic treasures picked up on far-flung travels, we’ve focused our cover story on the original tribal art that set the mood. In doing so, we discovered beautifully simple pieces, handcrafted with skill and soul – something of a metaphor for the intrinsic values of so many prized antiques throughout history from across the globe. These values also make mixing early artefacts with new artisanal designs deceptively simple – see how on page 38. MADELEINE GRAHAM Head of ceramics conservation at Plowden & Smith If I were restoring this item, I would start by removing any previous restoration residue and thoroughly clean the break edges using solvents and a steam cleaner. I would then reassemble and bond the broken shards with resin tinted with pigments to match. Losses would be filled, and the area of damage retouched, glazed and polished. Although the hole near the base could be restored using the same method, filling the vase with water would gradually break down the materials. However, a lighting specialist would easily be able to turn your restored vase back into a lamp. Restoration work would cost between £300–£500. After a luxurious soak in scented bubbles, few things feel more comforting than wrapping oneself in a warm and fleecy towel. Henry Christy certainly understood this, and in 1850 he returned to England from Constantinople with a sample of looped pile fabric which was entirely new to Britain. Soon after, he and his inventor brother created an ingenious machine that allowed his revolutionary ‘terry’ towelling to be produced on an industrial scale. However, it was only when Queen Victoria was presented with her very own bathtime set in 1851 that the towelling trend really caught on – and Christy soon received an order from the royal household for ‘six dozen’ sets for the queen’s very own bathroom. Fashioned from wood or metal, covered in canvas or leather, a sturdy trunk has been the practical long-haul solution for goods and chattels for hundreds of years. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Chinese imports such as tea and silk were carried in sweet-smelling (and insect-repelling) camphor wood chests. The glamorous heyday of train and ocean travel in the late 19th and early 20th centuries turned the steamer trunk into a luxury item, making it as much of a fashion statement as the haute couture contents within, with makers like Louis Vuitton and Moynat leading the way. 1 QUEEN OF THE STONE AGE Unsurprisingly, the human body is a recurring motif in sculpture and a subject that dates back millennia. One of the earliest representations of man (or in fact woman) is the Venus of Willendorf, a figurine found in 1908 by archaeologist Josef Szombathy at Willendorf, Austria. Dated c28,000-25,000BC, the carved statuette, made of oolite limestone tinted with red ochre pigment and measuring little over 11cm high, is faceless and footless yet rather well endowed. Its diminutive size suggests it was designed to be transported, confirmed by the type of stone, which is not found in eastern Austria. When Klimt first exhibited Bauerngarten, the dazzling and exuberant landscape of flowers that he painted in 1907, critics credited the painting with a mystical power. ‘The flower meadows are even more beautiful since Klimt has painted them,’ said one. On the chilly evening of 1st March this year, it seemed that little had changed. The audience at Sotheby’s much-touted Impressionist and Modern Art sale in London were similarly awestruck. Bauerngarten was the headline lot, and as it was placed behind the rostrum, a hush fell. My interest in South American antiquities was first sparked about 20 years ago on a visit to Mexico and the ancient city of Coba, which was then being literally dug out of the jungle. I was so taken with Mayan culture that, as soon as I got home, I started scouring for pieces to buy. I found that pottery was relatively easy to source. Styles vary hugely from culture to culture and I looked to other parts of the Americas for inspiration too. The Nazca, for instance, are known for zoomorphic designs (I have an enigmatic Nazca hummingbird bowl which looks eons ahead of its time) while, because of their bloodthirsty reputation, anything Aztec with a skull on it holds a morbid fascination. When Ed and Lucy Russell first viewed the Victorian schoolhouse that would become their future home, they discovered that the property consisted of the main school building plus an additional house in which the head teacher used to live. It looked like two different houses, each with its own front door, reached by a separate path. To further complicate matters, the ceilings in the building were of varying levels and the windows set at unusual heights. Pretty porcelain When I moved into my old house, this lovely Chinese vase had been left behind. At some point the neck has been broken and quite crudely restored, and the base has also been drilled – presumably to turn it into a lamp. UNIVERSALLY ACKNOWLEDGED Estimate: £2,000–£3,000 With 2017 marking 200 years since the death of Jane Austen, it’s fitting that a first-edition copy of her best-loved novel, Pride and Prejudice, has proved so desirable in the salesroom. Charting the roller coaster romance between headstrong heroine Elizabeth Bennet and the aloof Fitzwilliam Darcy, Pride and Prejudice was first published in three hardcover volumes in 1813. Initially printed without Austen’s name, she is listed as ‘the author of Sense and Sensibility’ in these copies, and each volume is bound in the half calf and marble boards that were favoured by bookbinders at the time. A century ago, artists such as Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse were waking up to the bold beauty of tribal art. The artists and their friends were regular visitors to the Trocadéro Ethnography Museum in Paris. Here they would wander the dark galleries filled with African sculptures and carvings that arrived in the city in large numbers from the 1870s, after the French colonisation of sub-Saharan Africa. ‘Tribal art was an important influence on the avant-garde artists of the early 20th century – Picasso collected it, Matisse, Braque, Giacometti, Modigliani, it changed the way they painted,’ says Antiques Roadshow specialist Ronnie Archer Morgan, who as an art student was so inspired by this notion that he began to collect in the field. ‘When tribal art is good it has an…

1 SIMPLE BARE BOARDS Wooden boards, like those used on the ceiling and floor in this room, are probably the most characteristic architectural fixture or fitting of Swedish style in its many historical variants, both urban and, as here, rural. Primarily red and white firs and pines, which grow in abundance throughout much of Scandinavia, have not only been employed in domestic construction, but also, from the 17th century, exported in considerable volume via the Baltic ports, for use in British and Northern European homes. 2 OAK-FRAMED WING CHAIR Although dated to the 18th century, this oak-framed upholstered armchair is both practical and aesthetically pleasing. It’s difficult to imagine interior decorator Catherine-Hélène Frei von Auffenberg, or her German husband, author Pierre Frei von Auffenberg, living in a mobile home. And yet, 16 years ago, their home for two months was, in Catherine’s words ‘a very small caravan’ in the garden of their recently purchased 13th-century castle in the village of Pampelonne in southwest France. ‘Initially, Pierre said he wouldn’t be able to live in it for more than a week, despite the chandelier I had installed for him,’ says Catherine. ‘But it had to be longer, as the house was uninhabitable. OUR EXPERT Christopher Payne is a fine art consultant and furniture specialist. A familiar face on the Antiques Roadshow since 1985, among other projects, Christopher is now working with an auction house in Beijing, helping to build its Western decorative arts department. This sublime writing table or bureau plat, which stands in the Music Room at Highclere Castle, is believed to have belonged to Napoleon Bonaparte and may once have stood in the Palace of Fontainebleau. Originally attributed to George Bullock, a cabinetmaker based in Liverpool and London, its true origin was only discovered when Lady Carnarvon found the Jacob Frères maker’s stamp on the underside.
