REBECCA GILBERT Bristol Auction Rooms The comical animated bottles and barrels indicate that this is a Brownfield advertising jug for Bass Brewery from the late 19th century. It should have an impressed mark to the base inscribed ‘BASS’, along with a production number. William Brownfield & Sons was a pottery based in Cobridge, North Staffordshire and it produced this jug as advertisement for the brewery, which first opened in 1777. The primary brew was ‘Bass Pale Ale’, which was once the highest-selling beer in the UK. With all this in mind, I would put an auction estimate on the jug of between £20 and £40.…

GEORGE ARCHDALE Cheffins Fine Art To me this looks to be part of an Indian or Sino-Indian frieze. The open scrolling appears to have a flower at one end and a stylised lotus seed pod the other. The pod seems to have been depicted as the petals are falling away, to leave a funnel-shaped head to a stalk. The flat top of the funnel is stippled with seeds somewhat akin to a watering can rose. I have chosen Indian because of the carving and Sino because of the lotus flower symbolism. Although frequently used in Buddhism, you can also see the lotus in illustrations of the Ramayana and Mahabharata legends, which cover all of India. WHO Home & Colonial came into being when Ali and Graeme Reid-Davies bought a stable conversion that was being renovated by Lizzi and Tony Stanton-Kipping. The four soon discovered a shared passion for antiques and, ‘before we knew it we were setting up shop together,’ explains Ali. WHAT Home & Colonial is in fact the original building (and name) of the UK’s first supermarket-style store. Now an antiques and interiors shop on Berkhamsted’s pretty high street: ‘It’s the kind of historic market town that often features in weekend supplements,’ says Ali of the shop’s location. It can take over a week to hand-polish the outside of a cast-iron bath in order to reach an immaculately shiny finish. It’s a process that’s par for the course though at Catchpole & Rye. The Kent-based company is fastidious about quality – its baths are all handmade and cast by British craftsmen to the exact specification of customers, down to the option of having your bath personalised with your coat of arms. You’ll quite possibly be familiar with Lucienne Day’s ‘Calyx’ fabric. Perhaps you remember seeing it made up into cushions or curtains in stylish, contemporary homes as you were growing up, or you’ve simply long-admired it as summing up modern 1950s design. With the swing in taste towards mid-century style, it stills looks as contemporary today as it did in 1951 – even though this year marks the centenary of its designer’s birth. Lucienne was born the youngest child of a Belgian father and English mother living in Croydon. From the start she was determined to follow her own path, first to Croydon School of Art and later to the Royal College of Art where she focused her creative talents on textiles. The British Antique Dealers’ Association (BADA) holds its 25th fair from 15th to 21st March, welcoming over 90 dealers. BADA was established in 1918 and is the country’s trade association for dealers in fine art, design and antiques. Colour feels good right now and it’s come at a time when I’m decorating my new home. I’ve found myself buying faded kilims, beautiful old tapestries and colourful cushions for my living room. 1 GILDED WALL MIRROR BRACKET If you didn’t know otherwise, you might assume this giltwood bracket with elaborately carved architectural and foliate motif surround was intended for displaying some form of ornament, possibly a small figure. But that isn’t, or rather wasn’t, its original purpose. The Grand Tour was a right of passage for aristocratic men – and a few women – which reached its heyday in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Grand Tourists toured Europe and Italy, north Africa and the Holy Land as an essential and fashionable part of their education. The souvenirs these discerning travellers brought back with them – copies of the classical sculptures, monuments and buildings or ruins of Greece and Rome – are still considered to be in very good taste, as they were then. I started collecting these souvenirs about 20 years ago, after purchasing a small, lava-stone model of the tomb of a Roman consul from the third century BC.
