Homes come into their own at this time of year. We retreat back indoors to get cosy as the evenings draw in and turn more of our attention to our interiors, than we perhaps did in the summer months. It’s around now that I like to embark on some home improvement (or, I should confess, encourage the husband to do so). A lick of paint and a new kitchen floor are on my wish list, but although he’s good at decorating, he’s actually more likely to be buying antiques. I bought this vase in New Zealand and as I assume it originated in Europe it must have been much loved, since someone cherished it enough to take it on the long journey south. Among the lots up for auction at Cheffins’ Art & Design from 1860 sale on 22nd October will be a collection of paintings and studio ceramics belonging to cookery writer Elizabeth Louard and her late husband Nicholas, who co-owned Private Eye magazine. Estimates for the collection of around 50 lots range from £200 to £10,000. The walls of the farmhouse from which Louard is downsizing were hung with a collection of paintings by British artists. Works for sale include Leon Underwood’s oil Water Buffalo, £2,000–£3,000. Based around a central photograph, Natasha Kerr’s textile panels are embellished with text, images and precious personal objects that tell the story of a person’s life. Having started off by delving into her own family archives, she has since focused on creating work for other people. Her public commissions have included a suffragette Millennium postage stamp, a series of panels for St Thomas’ hospital in London and a piece for the V&A exhibition Quilts 1700–2010, which enabled her to fulfil her dream of seeing her work on a poster on London’s Tube network. ‘Model No 41’ lounge chair or ‘Paimio’ armchair, c1931 Born in 1898, the Finn Alvar Aalto became one of the most celebrated architects of his generation, earning plaudits from around the world, including Britain’s Royal Gold Medal of Architecture (1957) and France’s Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur (1939). One of the buildings that helped make his name early on in his career is the Varsinais-Suomi tuberculosis sanitorium in the town of Paimio, south-west Finland. The young Aalto won the architectural competition to design it in 1929, chosen by judges who relished his modernist plans. Carlo Mollino might well be the most important Italian designer you’ve never heard of. The architect and designer of interiors and furniture was born in Turin in 1905, the son of a successful engineer. After his death in 1973, a legacy of sublime design was counterpoised by tales of a dark personality. These stories were fuelled by the discovery of a secret apartment and a collection of Polaroids of women he’d paid to model for him, either naked or dressed by him. While his predilections have become the subject of speculation, one thing is certain: his furniture, notable for its organic, seductive forms, remains among the most sought after in the art and design world. Antique fireplaces suit contemporary and classic interiors, while a new one can be a striking addition or be painted to recede into its surroundings. In the 1970s Venini continued to work with top designers such as James Carpenter, the pioneering New York-based designer and glass specialist who is renowned for his many cutting-edge architectural projects. His domestic-scale Calabash vase for Venini, created in 1972, includes green and red zanfirico canes on a sulphur yellow ground and was produced into the 1980s. The zanfirico technique dates back to the 16th century and involves stretching and twisting canes of glass into pretty lattice patterns. The vase, sold by The Auction Room in an online sale of the late Lord McAlpine’s collection of post-1970s Murano glass last summer, was estimated at £400 to £600 and sold for £600.…

The pre-eminent Finnish designer Tapio Wirkkala (1915–1985) is renowned for his glass designs, such as Iittala’s Chantarelle, 1947, and Ultima Thule, 1968. He created the Bolle series of water bottles and carafes for Venini in 1966 and they continue to be produced and sold today. To make his classic design, Wirkkala used the incalmo technique, which fuses two or more elements together – a method that requires great precision on behalf of the glass blower because the diameters of each element have to be exactly the same to fit together seamlessly. This 23.5cm-tall, olive and mauve version was made in 1991. Estimated at £250 to £300 it garnered a respectable £260 final bid.…

‘Strangers not allowed on this works,’ reads a large sign outside the imposing, red-brick Victorian building that houses the Middleport Pottery. You ignore the warning. Instead you venture through the huge front doors and cross the metal weigh bridge that, long ago, was used by the wholesalers who brought in cartloads of pottery by the ton. You make your way along a cobbled alley and pass a potter carrying rows of grey, unglazed teapots on a dusty plank – a ‘ware board’ – skilfully balanced on one hand. Another potter balances one on his head. Through open doors you glimpse rows of workers applying delicate floral flakes of printed tissue paper to tureens. Thirty years ago a painfully thin young whippersnapper burst into my gallery in Chelsea and declared that the display of silver in my window was not up to scratch. The window was laden with extraordinary art silver by master designer Jean E Puiforcat. As a coda to his extraordinary existence, over 1,000 Polaroid photographs taken by Mollino were discovered by Fulvio Ferrari in the 1980s. Made in secret during the last two decades of his life, the photos feature women posed naked or wearing clothes Mollino bought for them. The images, some of which were retouched by Mollino, have been interpreted as ushabtis – the small figurines placed in Egyptian tombs to accompany the dead into the afterlife. The discovery of the Polaroids intensified the mystery surrounding the man. The majority of the pictures are split between two private collections. AIR PLAY Air plants are a striking alternative to using small tropical plants. Just as their name suggests, these plants get all the nutrients and moisture they need from the air so don’t require soil. They are grown in ariums as opposed to terrariums – ariums were named by a nursery based in San Francisco that dropped the ‘terra’ (soil) part of the word. Eye catching varieties to try include Tillandsia brachycaulos and T. concolor, T. aeranthos and T. funckiana. Ariums should be positioned in bright areas (but not direct sunlight) and kept at a mild temperature – not too hot and not too cold. Botanist Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward invented the terrarium in 1829 through a chance discovery. Having devised a sealed glass case in which to keep and observe insects, Ward noticed that a rogue spore from one of the ferns in his garden, which struggled to grow due to the air pollution of Victorian Britain, had germinated inside – and was thriving in the constant humidity of the hermetically-sealed environment. He realised that evaporated moisture was condensing on the glass wall and running back to the soil, providing a constant supply of water. We asked auctioneer Catherine Southon to choose a piece of Venini glass she would like to buy for her own collection if money were no object. She chose this elegant but colossal (52cm tall) Long-Neck vase. It was made in the early 1950s to a design by Carlo Scarpa, who was the artistic director of Venini from 1932–1947. The vase sold for £952 at Bonhams New York. ‘Carlo Scarpa created some of the most beautiful shapes for Venini,’ says Catherine. ‘But this combination of a soft, baby blue with such a simple sculptural shape creates a wonderful feeling of tranquility and peace. This much-later version dates to 1997 HOW TO DISPLAY When it comes to glass, less is more, so don’t clutter your display shelves with pieces. Instead, give each one space to breathe. Glass is best lit from behind to reveal its colours and sparkle to great effect. Place pieces on a windowsill or inside a cabinet with integral spotlights. Deep in the heart of Middleport Pottery is a vast room that contains over 19,000 moulds. Stacks of moulds – all labelled with their design name and the year they were made – line the shelves. Plaster gives the air a musty, church-like atmosphere and, in reverence to the room’s contents, you can’t help but whisper. ‘The moulds are the DNA of Burleigh,’ says Steven Moore, Prince’s Regeneration Trust ambassador and Burleigh’s newly appointed creative director. ‘Moulds for everything the pottery has made, from the 1880s onwards, are in this one room, along with moulds from earlier factories, such as Davenport and Samuel Alcock, bought by Burleigh when they closed down.’ During the regeneration process, the mould store, which was housed on the second floor, was found to be four…

The genius of the architect MJ Long’s 1990s restoration of the restaurant was that while much of the furnishing was new, it was true to the style of The Ivy’s heyday in the 1930s. To reincarnate The Ivy once again, current owner Richard Caring asked Martin Brudnizki, the interiors architect responsible for refurbishments of other London institutions such as Annabel’s and Le Caprice, to take charge. The original stained glass and many of the artworks remain (such as a Damien Hirst and the Barry Flanagan hare sculpture), but otherwise the place has been renewed with Lalique-style lamps, a glass and brass bar infused with art deco style, and plush pink velvet bar stools. ‘The interior looked, from day one, like it had been there for ever,’ says director Fernando Peire.…

The Victorians got the spa experience just right. No kale-green smoothies and hot yoga for them; it was all about promenades in the park followed by hot, buttered buns and a pot of tea. The first mineral spa was discovered in the Yorkshire town of Harrogate in the 16th century but it was during the Victorian era that it became a fashionable place to take the waters. Members of every European Royal family visited and legend has it Princess Alix of Hesse (granddaughter of Queen Victoria) liked to race her sister Victoria through the streets in their bath chairs. I’ve been journeying towards this cup for a long time. I first saw one like it in the Victoria and Albert Museum when I was a child. There’s a lot of porcelain there, especially gilded and swagged German porcelain decorated with nymphs, so the purity of this white cup was incredibly powerful to me. I kept seeking out white porcelain in museums all over the world, especially early white Meissen cups like this one. I felt that I couldn’t write my new book – a sort of autobiography about how white has remained a constant in my life – without having this cup in my hand, so I bought one in Bonhams. The Brinton family of Kidderminster has a lengthy history when it comes to carpet weaving. William Brinton, who had a love of British textiles, opened the family’s first mill in 1783 and, by 1819, Brintons had quickly graduated to a factory in the heart of Kidderminster, becoming John Brinton and Sons Limited (under William’s grandson) 50 years later. Though it was a highly successful carpet maker, patenting the Axminster loom (which allows for the weaving of multiple colours) in 1890, it wasn’t until the firm gained a commission of royal standards that it came to worldwide attention. Brintons was asked to supply the carpets for the Queen Mary steamer ship in 1933, launched by Queen Mary herself. Soon the company was held in such high regard that it became the…

This exquisite amber-coloured vase inspired by the simple shapes and forms of ancient Roman glass was given an estimate of €4,000 to €6,000 (£2,900 to £4,400) by Christie’s experts but the bidding on it quickly ramped up to an incredible €32,200 (£23,500). ‘The technique used to create this vase made it very desirable,’ says Simon Andrew of Christie’s. The technique he refers to was battuto, a method of horizontally faceting the surface of the glass to resemble beaten metal, done by finely grinding the cold vessel once it has been fired. ‘It’s so difficult to do and very easy to break the piece,’ says Simon. ‘It requires perfect skills.’…

This arresting, 16.5cm-tall, black and red vase is intended to be an impressionistic reflection of a poppy. It has a subtle murrino, or mosaic-pattern, surface and is one of only a handful of known examples of a bold 1940-design by Carlo Scarpa in this colourway. Christie’s 20th-century decorative-art specialist, Simon Andrews, helped catalogue the 2012 Paris sale where this vase sold. ‘This very striking piece, which required supreme glass-making skills to create, was part of a collection of around 170 items of Venini glass that hadn’t been seen since the 1940s, so it was fresh to the market.
