When many of us choose an antique, we buy with our hearts. So what makes you fall for a special find? Spanish tulips We bought this tulip vase about five years ago in a private sale and it stands proudly in our bay window. It’s actually Spanish in origin and is marked ‘Casasus’, and I would love to know how old it is and what it may be worth. A SHOW OF HANDS Estimate: £5,000–£7,000 There’s something about items that artists have touched, used or held that makes us feel that little bit closer to their work. Take the new gallery trend for recreating artists’ studios as part of exhibitions; it gives the work a sense of place and its original purpose. You can see Francis Bacon’s entire studio recreated at the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin, but recently at Chiswick Auctions you could have had the chance to own a pair of his painting gloves too. • Really good restorers often don’t have a shop or a website, and they don’t do any marketing or advertising. The best way to nd one is through word of mouth. • Don’t call a restorer and ask for a price; visit them. A messy, chaotic workshop can be the sign of a bodger. A serious craftsman has a workshop that’s in good order, with two or three high-quality, nished pieces covered up, all ready to go. • A good restorer won’t tell you who their clients are. Discretion is important. • Take the item you’d like to have restored with you and talk about how you would like it to look. A good one will listen and do what you want, but also advise. We asked George Archdale for the piece he wishes he’d bought at auction, money no object. He chose a blue-and-white dish, 13in in diameter that was made in Japan for the Dutch East India Company for export to Holland. ‘For historic reasons I’m interested in early Japanese blue-and-white, but the dish is also stunningly well painted. The company’s monogram, VOC (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie) is at the centre of the plate, giving it even more appeal. It was damaged so fetched £1,400 in Cheffins’ Oriental Sale, but in better condition would get £5,000 to £6,000.’…

1 AN OCEAN’S BOUNTY From ancient times, the finest pearls were retrieved from oyster beds in the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea and the Gulf of Mannar, a shallow bay in the Indian Ocean. Pearl oysters were harvested from the seabed by divers, then taken to nearby ships for sorting, where they were prised open in search of the jewel. The process was time-consuming and the success rate low. A pearl is technically an aberration – not all oysters develop them. For the pearl hunters of old, there was no way of telling whether an oyster contained a pearl other than to open it; a job that nine times out of 10 proved fruitless. Beloved old furnishings become like old friends, so most of our things are antique. We found this chair in an antiques centre on Norman Road in Hastings. When we first bought our house we went there a lot. It’s a big old shop that’s on several floors and is full of wonderful things. I couldn’t resist this large winged chair. Before we did the needlepoint it had very boring upholstery but I liked the idea of redoing it because the high back makes a tremendous canvas to work on. ALISON SNOWDON, Ceramics specialist The two examples on display at Chatsworth and revealed in the June issue of H&A are 17th-century and to me they are icons of Delft design, which is perhaps why they have been copied for centuries. With their obelisk stature, I imagine they look absolutely fantastic with bright blooms in each opening. It is quite dif cult to tell from the photograph, but I suspect your example is a 20th-century copy – the colour and type of decoration would certainly suggest so. Sadly I have not found anything speci c about the Casasus potteries and I have not found anything remotely similar to your piece. Why do we call tumblers – the relatively sturdy glasses with wide, flat bottoms – tumblers? It may be that early, 17th-century versions had a rounded base and would naturally tumble over. Or it may be just the opposite – that they were weighted in order to right themselves if knocked. Whatever the origins of the name, we have businessman George Ravenscroft and his 1694 innovation of sparkling lead crystal to thank for the array of styles and colours that followed over the years. Today, the modern (non-hazardous) crystal glass is the classic choice, but if you do spot some antique tumblers made with lead, don’t be afraid to snap them up – they’re harmless if used in short bursts, so you’ll just have to drink up quickly. Think Chinese antiques and your mind may conjure up Ming vases and million-pound prices, but it’s actually a collecting field with a broad spectrum of objects and values. Most of the top regional auction houses run regular oriental and Asian antiques sales (see page 112 for our oriental Auction Focus). RENAISSANCE REVIVAL When Louis Philippe I took to the throne in 1830, he brought with him his love of French history. He was keen to promote the revival of French styles, such as the Renaissance period, which had been largely forgotten and ignored during the 18th century. This revival affected architecture, interior design, furniture, jewellery and – as seen here – ceramics. LEONARDO DA VINCI Francis I was patron to great artists of his time, including Da Vinci, whom he bought the Mona Lisa from (and displayed in Château de Fontainebleau’s royal baths). 1 TRAVEL THE WORLD The appeal of global style has filtered its way through all the major department stores as well as smaller boutiques, ensuring multi-ethnic design is a key trend. To inject a splash of this vibrant look into your space, Sue Roberts, director of home design at House of Fraser suggests opting for ‘relaxed geometric prints and earthy hues, block-printed textiles, hand embroideries and re-imagined weaves for a modern style inspired by global traditions.’ This is a look that appeals to the senses. Furniture and flooring in natural materials like rattan, rush and distressed wood form the framework, while colour and soft textures bring it to life. These days, all the top regional auction houses run regular oriental and Asian antiques sales and Cheffins in Cambridge is no exception, mounting three auctions a year to offer porcelain, bronzes, paintings, prints and textiles made in China, Japan and other Far Eastern and Asian countries. While some of the auction houses concentrate on high-end pieces with impressive provenances and suitably stratospheric estimates, the range at Cheffins is more accessible, starting at £100 and going up to around £6,000. Even at Cheffins though, eventual hammer prices can soar way over estimates if two bidders lock horns over an item. It’s Chinese buyers who get involved in most of these bidding wars, as they snap up the majority of the Chinese antiques, buying back their cultural heritage. And, across the oriental…

Antique textiles are harder to fake than porcelain, so authentic costume is becoming more popular at auction. This colourful robe made for a Straits Chinese bride is beautifully embroidered with chickens strutting among flowers. It was part of a small collection of antique wedding wear consigned to Cheffins last year that had belonged to a Straits Chinese family, specifically a mother and daughter licensed to take weddings. The children of Chinese traders who lived and worked in the Malay, Singapore and Straits area were known as the Peranakan and their weddings were elaborate affairs that took place over three days. Families would often hire parts of the dress and jewellery. Estimated at £300 to £400, this robe sold for £1,700.…

1 MÄRKLIN PADDLE BOAT Compulsive attention to detail on this 1900–1902 toy paddle boat (the most expensive tinplate boat sold at auction) is why German toy makers Märklin’s pieces fetch such high prices. ‘Märklin’s craftsmanship brought to life a toy that exudes luxury with the utmost artistic perfection,’ says Judith Miller. 32 FROMANTEEL CLOCK ‘This clock was made by John Fromanteel, the clockmaker, who in 1657 travelled to The Hague to learn the secret of applying a pendulum to a clock movement,’ says James Stratton, director of Bonhams’ fine clocks department. ‘It revolutionized timekeeping.’ BUY Expect to pay from £10,000 up to hundreds of thousands of pounds 33 FABERGÉ EGG, 1887 Carl Fabergé made 50 of his famed Easter eggs for the Russian Imperial Court, of which 42 were known to have survived. In 2014, however, a scrap gold dealer came across this piece in America. In 1709, when German alchemist Johann Friedrich Böttger discovered how to make white, translucent porcelain, similar to the much-coveted oriental porcelain, a revolution in European ceramics began. A year later, King Augustus II of Poland sponsored the establishment of the Meissen factory in Dresden to create what is known as Böttger porcelain. By the 1720s, Meissen had developed a new range of enamel colours to add chinoiserie-style decoration. Much of the early Meissen porcelain was made to furnish royal palaces and the homes of nobles, and has a formal look. Du Paquier, established in Vienna in 1719 (continuing to 1744) by Dutchman Claude du Paquier, followed closely on Meissen’s heels as only the second European factory to produce hard-paste porcelain, assisted by a former Meissen kiln master. There is an old adage that ‘pearls love to be worn’ and, while it may be true that they look their best draped around a neck or wrist, it is far from true that this is good for them. ‘It is a fallacy that wearing pearls all the time is good for them,’ advises Geoffrey Munn. ‘They are subject to wear and tear because they are soft.’ But you can wear your pearls without fear of damaging them – just make sure you follow Munn’s advice. WHO In 1963 Parisian-born Genevieve Weaver decided she wanted to change her dining table. Luckily she lived on the Portobello Road and had built up a rapport with the dealers there. When I was 16, I started out as an apprentice at a stained glass restorers. I was taught by two guys and thrown in to their workshop in North Wales. I’d come straight out of school with dreadlocks flowing down my back and I was lucky enough to fall into the hands of a very talented man in his 60s. Joe was a true craftsman. He was grumpy and difficult, but boy was he talented. He’d make a toolbox, and if he needed a special tool to tackle a special piece of restoration, he would make that too. With its hourglass base and huge curved back lled in with delicate pattern work reminiscent of a peacock’s fantail, there is no mistaking the ‘Peacock’ chair, beloved of photographers for almost a century. No one knows the exact origin of this chair design, although its ancestors are without doubt the hourglass rattan chairs imported from Asia into Britain in the second half of the 19th century. One theory is that they originally came from Manila in the Philippines and were made as novelties for export as the back is not a traditional Asian shape. ORIENTAL DESIGN Hardwood stand, late 19th-century Chinese furniture has such a strong look, featuring scrolls and curlicues arranged in a geometrical, structured way. All sorts of woods were used to make furniture for the home market and for export, including elm, camphor, rosewood and walnut. The finest furniture is made from huanghuali, sourced from Thailand and Vietnam, and fetches high prices at auction. Hongmu, a more run-of-the-mill type of rosewood, became popular in the early 19th century. Hardwood stands such as these were used to display vases or decorative arts. THE COLLECTORS’ COLLECTOR This April, a landmark British collection of Chinese ceramics went on sale at Sotheby’s Hong Kong and made a grand total of 502,772,500 Hong Kong dollars (just over £48.5m). The prestigious salesroom was packed with eager buyers as the Pilkington Collection of Chinese Art came up for sale – 97 lots of some of the finest porcelain ever made, spanning 1,000 years of Chinese porcelain production from the Tang, Ming and Qing dynasties. The owner was the late Roger Pilkington of the Pilkington Glass manufacturing family, who had amassed the collection during the 1950s and 1960s. Pilkington followed in the footsteps of pioneering British porcelain collectors active in the 1920s and 1930s in China and Japan, and as a second generation collector acquired pieces from these early…

Many stolen artworks, earmarked for Hitler’s ‘Führermuseum’, were hidden inside the Austrian Altaussee salt mines. An Allied unit, called the Monuments Men, was charged with tracking down works of art taken by the Nazis. In May 1945, the unit cracked through a seal to find items including 6,577 paintings, 173 statues and 1,200 cases of rare books. Here are four famous artworks that were hidden during the Second World War and eventually returned: The Mona Lisa by Italian painter Leonardo da Vinci was evacuated from the Louvre in 1939, along with 400,000 other works of art. It was kept safe in a string of French homes before returning to the museum in 1945 after the war had ended. The Ghent Altarpiece by Dutch artist Jan van Eyck was coveted by…

Baroque pearls These irregularly shaped and often very large pearls were commonly set into jewellery during the 16th, 17th and 19th centuries. Blister pearls Often flat on one side, these gems, which form along the mollusc shell, are best suited to earrings. Bouton pearls A pearl with a rounded top and a flat base, these were popular in the 19th and 20th centuries. Seed pearls Tiny little pearls often used in decorative clusters in Victorian jewellery and in long strings, twisted together, to create a chain. Freshwater Found in rivers and inland waters, these pearls tend to be white and can be less lustrous than other types.
