A LUSH CANOPY
This green oasis under the vines at KP and Petro Steenkamp's home in Middelburg, Mpumalanga is the perfect place for get-togethers, no matter the season.
“In summer, the wild grape (Rhoicissus tomentosa) creates a lush entertainment area,” says Petro. “You won't believe how quickly it grows; it covers the arbour within a season.”
In autumn, the leaves turn shades of yellow and bright red and in winter, when all the leaves are gone, the filtered sunshine is a joy. “We also planted two slow-growers, Chinese wisteria (Wisteria sinensis) and star jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides), for their lovely scent and floral beauty,” Petro adds.
