About three years ago, we featured a beautiful home in Gqeberha. Earlier this year, the homeowner emailed me to say that she had since changed a few things in the house and was wondering if we would like to come and take another look. Plate up? When choosing the perfect shade of pink for her living room, ceramicist Kate Malan was inspired by the fynbos surrounding the Gqeberha home she shares with her husband Craig and their sons, Ben and Gabriel. “I wanted an earthy, natural pink for the walls and I decided to add a mural as a talking point,” explains Kate. “The colourful ceramic plate (above the doorway) with its organic shapes served as inspiration and I’d seen a similar black-and-white circle design online. The concept grew from there.” Kate made a blue circle using leftover paint from a previous project and an upside-down arch that’s mirrored in the adjacent nook. “For the arches, I mixed white with the original pink until I was satisfied with the shade,” she adds. Marmite chicken Under R130 • Serves 4 • Preparation: 15 minutes Cooking time: 45 minutes • Oven temperature: 200°C • 15ml Marmite (or to taste) • 30ml softened butter • 3 sprigs thyme, leaves stripped • 4 chicken quarters (drumstick and thigh pieces) • 1 large onion, sliced • 500g baby potatoes, halved (smaller is better) • 15ml flour 1 Preheat the oven. My valiant dog was just seconds too late to intervene in a killing when we were out by the river for our late afternoon stroll a few days ago. She had noticed some suspicious movement through the long winter grass and charged towards it. But, alas, too late. The squirrel lying there on the soft river sand was already dead.
