Deflated Luke Jacomb Studio released a range of blown-glass pieces last month, and we’re taken with the collection’s playful character and decadently whimsical new colours. Comprising three objects, the Deflated vase, the Umbrella cup, and the Bubble Bud vase, this is a collection of glorious hues. The Deflated vases are blown to size and shaped while hot to create the organic deflated design of each piece, delivering beautiful shadows and flowing forms. Created using a vintage Italian blow mould, the Umbrella cups in the collection are defined by their striking fluted base. Constructed in 1912, the St James Theatre is a heritage-listed building that has seen various upgrades over the years, most notably in 1993 with a large addition that included the retrofitting of an adjacent building to serve as the theatre’s new foyer and a home for the Royal New Zealand Ballet. However, in 2015, changes to structural codes resulted in the complex being identified as earthquake prone. Work began to strengthen the building; alongside that, an extensive refurbishment project was undertaken, incorporating a full redecoration of the…

Step inside, however, and the spaces offer an unexpected and decidedly contemporary charm. Here, the oak-ply-lined ceiling and walls glow in the sun, a cave-like sleeping nook becomes the main bedroom, and a simple material palette strikes a balance between subtle accentuation of the architectural elements and a gentle textural and tonal rhythm that connects each space with the next. The extensive renovation, designed by architect Anne Kelly of a.k.a. Architecture, retained the small footprint of this house. At just 76m2, that size belies the sense of volume that the reconfigured interior spaces achieve. “We were restrained in what we could do, as the aim was to avoid needing resource consent, so we had to stay within the existing building envelope,” Anne says. “The architecture needed to be the backdrop for the landscape rather than the other way around” Facing south looking over Huruhi Bay on Waiheke Island, this home was initially designed as a bach but quickly became a permanent home for its designer, architect Craig Roberts of Designgroup Stapleton Elliott, and his family. The land had been owned by Craig and his wife Jane for a number of years. It was a place they visited often from Wellington, and where they inhabited a small mustard-coloured fibrolite bach. While the setting was spectacular, the old dwelling left a lot to be desired. The site’s southern border meets a busy boardwalk, while, to the north-west, a large old pōhutukawa tree’s twisted boughs stretch out across the property. With the views to the south…

Judges Bay, where this home is located, is a fascinating convergence point. A few hundred metres to the north, Ports of Auckland buzzes away as cargo ships from around the world drop off their wares. Everything, from beads and rhinestones to a giraffe for the zoo through to enormous boring machines, has been offloaded here, ready to be pumped through the veins of commerce into Auckland and the rest of the island. Historically, the area has also been an arrival point not just for objects but for people and ideas. Bishop Selwyn first landed here, as did the early colony’s first magistrates, who made their homes on this bay and named it after their profession. Entries for the 2023 Home Interior of the Year awards close on 11 August. Across five categories, the awards seek to recognise outstanding design in three distinct areas of the home: Kitchen, Bathroom, and Living, with two further categories, Colour and Emerging Designer, considering the masterful use of colour in an interior space and the work of a young or early career designer, respectively. The awards will be announced in Auckland in late September, with the winner of each category receiving a prize valued at $10,000. Jen’s latest series, Imaginal, represents a voyage into the unknown for both artist and viewer. “I think it pushes the creative boundaries by embracing Al [artificial intelligence] technology; bridging the worlds of art and technology and offering a fresh perspective on contemporary living spaces while maintaining a strong connection to the landscapes and timeless beauty inspired by Morocco and Palm Springs,” Jen explains. “It’s about the power of imagination. An imaginal realm is made of potential; a place that doesn’t yet exist other than in our minds. I’ve created these to imagine the world from a different angle. It’s a fresh start, a first-time experience, something unique and special.” That’s true both in the subject matter and in the way the works were created, which Jen describes as “a collaboration…

Sydney’s interior-design mavericks Juliette Arent and Sarah-Jane Pyke have a unique aesthetic that seems to combine a little of Kelly Wearstler, a touch of India Mahdavi, and perhaps even a touch of Auckland’s Material Creative. “Joy, colour, character, spirit, and alchemy” are the main themes that the design duo refer to when describing their own work, and those same words underpin many of the project choices in this book. In Salsa Verde House, for instance, they have managed to distil a local vernacular without the need for populist cliché. The alchemic usage of colour and natural stone; a wide range of red earth-like colours against backdrops of aboriginal-art-alluding striation on marbles; the usage of local timbers and shapes — all these conspire to create something utterly familiar and relaxed while…

There’s nothing standard when it comes to Tony’s designs, although there is poetry, beauty, and an innate synergy between built and natural environment. It’s an intentional process, in which the architect turns away from any preconceived idea or regional vernacular, and even sometimes the client brief. “If you’re not pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone, you’re not growing,” Tony says, both of his design methodology and the way that he works with clients. “In this case, the clients initially wanted a traditional gabled pavilion,” he explains. This home for two began with the search for land. “We had an early brief of ‘living big on a central city site’,” architect Mitchell Coll of Fabric tells us. At that stage, the clients had yet to find land, so the search for just the right site became a collaborative journey between architect and clients. “Coming from a character bungalow, and knowing they would eventually retire in their new home, there was a strong desire [by the clients] to build something low maintenance so their time could be spent enjoying inner-city living.” Mitchell explains. The public spaces were pushed forward towards the water, with the private areas set back for privacy The clients, a couple with adult children and grandchildren, wanted a place to entertain, and one where their extended family could come and stay; a place where they could see the sea, and one that offered a hint at beach house living, taking cues from a coastal home in which they spend a lot of time. HOME + Ironclad In 2019, three former advertising executives decided that it was time to explore something new. The clients approached Seear-Budd Ross with the idea of creating an extension to make the garden child-friendly and a more desirable place to occupy. The site consisted of dilapidated brick retaining walls, large terraces, and windswept planting. The extension was to house an en suite within the existing basement, as well as a bedroom that could also be used as an office. A small addition, it is defined by muted tones that work in perfect harmony. Desaturated almost, it is a palette of a gentle rhythm that surreptitiously evokes creativity within an embracing warmth, utilising just four key materials: lime-washed brick, polished plaster, oak panelling, and stone. An exterior brick wall winds inside, while the rest of the walls and the ceilings are finished with bespoke polished plaster from Ambitec.…

“I’ve always been a very visual person, someone who believes good design can have a positive impact on your life. Even as a child I had definite ideas about aesthetics and that’s continued as an adult,” says Sarah Lods. Over the years, Sarah and her husband Philippe Lods have completed six renovations and one new build. Their latest project is a century-old villa in Ponsonby, Auckland. They came up with a concept to transform the dated, dark interior and had a draughtsman turn their ideas into detailed plans. It involved leaving the hall and three bedrooms intact. The reconfigured layout created a generously proportioned living area, with the kitchen and lounge opening to the rear garden.
