As the sun sets on Yankunytjatjara Pitjantjatjara land, Wintjiri Wiṟu, meaning ‘beautiful view out to the horizon’ in the local Pitjantjatjara language, unfolds – a cultural storytelling experience that brings to life a chapter of the ancestral Mala story, a story passed down for thousands of generations, and now illuminating the night sky through choreographed drones, lasers and projections. HQBE + Bayleys “We designed the house to subtly fit into the location; it's strong and recessive at the same time,” Gerald says of the design. “The land's not perfect so we created a meandering journey down the hillside. There is no front entry as such, so you can enter from different levels and various pathways.” When you approach from above, the roof drops down; from the water, the layers of roof appear, Gerald says. “We left the edges white and kept the walls dark. Bamurru Plains On the edge of floodplains where buffalo roam, the birdlife is ever-present and the light is vivid, these mesh-walled cabins invite an immersive experience in the natural environment. Inspired by the bush camps of Africa, and located on the floodplains of the Mary River on the edge of the Kakadu National Park, Bamurru Plains is a 300km2 private property where safari bungalows are designed as havens from which to watch and encounter the parade of wildlife emerging from the floodplains. Raised on stilts overlooking the floodplain with mesh screen floor-to-ceiling walls on three sides, the experience here is one of complete immersion in the wilderness. Surrounded by dense native bush just behind the walking trail between Matapouri Bay and Whale Bay, the site was chosen for its privacy, proximity to the surf beach below, and the views down to the ocean. In contrast to the clients’ Auckland home, a place where this busy family of six enjoy their daily life in the bustling, almost chaotic manner typical of large families, this abode was designed to allow for only what was needed, intentionally removing cupboards, wardrobes and storage areas so guests would take everything away that they brought with them, leaving an uncluttered and peaceful collection of spaces to return to. As architect Jose Gutierrez sees it, architecture should never shout. Rather, it should whisper, and it should evoke a response — good or bad. In the case of this family home in Auckland, Jose was given a brief that presented obvious challenges: six bedrooms, a pool, and two lounges — a home for a large family group on a sloping, tapering site on the side of a Remuera valley. What he envisioned was a home that floated over the land, drawing light in from above. It was the slope of the site that ultimately formed the basis of a design evocative of the traditional scale of homes in this Remuera street, where large bungalows are prevalent. Fitting into the rhythm of the streetscape with its hipped roof, the exterior of this home is otherwise unapologetically pared back – bold in its simplicity and subtly alluring with its sandy palette of soft tones. The idea of this design from the very beginning was to create a building that would capture a sense of calm while maximising its connection to the water and natural environment. Rising up behind the site, steep hills covered in regenerating native bush form a plateau around the suburb, and mark the habitable boundary of the narrow sliver of land that Eastbourne covers. His 2016 installation, Field of Light, is the embodiment of this experience. As darkness falls and Uluṟu is thrown into silhouette, the land becomes alive. As far as the eye can see, colours illuminate the desert. Overwhelming in size, it is Bruce's largest work to date, covering an area the size of more than seven football fields. Inviting complete immersion into what becomes a fantasy garden of sorts with 50,000 spindles of light, the stems breathing and swaying through a sprawling desert spectrum of ochre, deep violet, blue and warm white. “I wanted to create an illuminated field of stems that, like the dormant seed in a dry desert, would burst into bloom at dusk with gentle rhythms of light under a blazing blanket of stars,” Bruce says. Bitter Springs The crystal clear waters of Bitter Springs in the Elsey National Park (pictured, top) are the perfect place for a refreshing dip. Set amongst palms and tropical woodlands, these spring-fed thermal pools are well worth the visit. Bitter Springs is located approximately 2km from Mataranka and 420km southeast of Darwin. Butterfly Gorge Cool crevices in the rock face of Butterfly Gorge (pictured, above) provide shelter for thousands of common crow butterflies. The rock pools with their cool water are shaded by paperbarks reaching up to 50 metres in height. Runway One of the highlights of the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair each year is Country to Couture, where textiles and fashion collide in a colourful showcase of wearable art. Country to Couture celebrates the marriage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander contemporary fine art and high-end fashion. Building on the growing textile design movement in remote indigenous communities, the runway event presents new collections from indigenous designers and artists across Australia, as well as unique collaborations between indigenous communities and wellknown Australian fashion labels. Capturing the essence of its coastal site, the exterior of this house is an amalgamation of sandy tones — contemporary and alluring — while its form echoes the more traditional vernacular of the streetscape. A stretched hipped roof creates the low-slung form, which, despite the building's sizable volume, allows it to settle into the site without feeling conspicuous in a street mostly dominated by hipped and gabled roofs.
