This is always my favourite issue of the year to put together. It is a celebration of innovation, of bold design, and of homes that deliver joy. These are houses with unique creative visions; projects that deliver meaningful spaces for their occupants and those that settle into their site and environmental setting with ease. HOME + Resene Architecture and Design Film Festival Brown vs. Brown Simon Mark Brown Simon Mark Brown's father Peter Mark-Brown died when he was 17. Brown vs. Brown is a documentary Simon first started 23 years ago. It is an in-depth consideration of mid-century modernist architecture in New Zealand and the tension between the regionalists and the internationalists. Simon explores his late father's work during this era, how he fitted in and why he changed his name. "The tension was such that my father changed his name from Peter Brown to Peter Mark-Brown during architecture school so as not to be confused with Vernon Brown the leading Regionalist (we were told). HOME + Peter Fell From the street, the twisting, sculptural form takes a moment to understand. Reaching out in different directions, this home, the 2023 City Home of the Year, cantilevers out to capture different views — of the city and the sea. It is apparent from the outset that this home is one of a kind. Owned by an avid art collector, this sculptural vision is as eclectic as the art housed inside. Originally, the house was to have a concrete floor base with two metal-clad storeys. This changed to become a single form all clad in a dark, matte-black high-tech aluminium. Although most high-end kitchens these days feature a scullery (oft times disguised behind a hidden door), New Plymouth kitchen designer Annika Rowson is personally not always a fan. Although in the right situation sculleries are practical, she puts 110 per cent into the design of the kitchen itself, so rightly asks, “Why would you want to disconnect from that beautiful space?” Annika is a thoughtful, practical designer who has become a go-to name for North Island residents wanting kitchens that embrace contemporary elegance. Japanese Interiors By Mihoko lida Phaidon Vogue Japan's editor Mihoko lida lends her finely attuned eye to the current state of Japanese residential interiors. The result is a richly textured book that recognises the nation's significant design exports while foretelling an evolution or at least potential trajectories. Yes, the shoebox-sized apartments are well represented among the 28 houses here, but so are grandiose coastal and alpine homes and rural abodes with tradition at their core. While compact, both dwellings are high performing and spatially efficient; there's a sense of openness here that invites the stunning rugged south coast vistas indoors while offering a refuge from the elements. Jae, co-founder of Makers of Architecture, says the decision to use two Colorsteel® colours in the same profile for the roofing and cladding was about tying the two dwellings together while picking up on the surrounding environment. Responsibly responding to the impact of climate change includes a design-led shift in thinking in Aotearoa New Zealand. The role of architects and architecture is critical. Sherwood Queenstown launched its artist residency programme last month, hosting Northland creative duo Ophelia and Ryder Jones for a 10-day stay culminating in an on-site exhibition. What did you find most inspiring about the alpine location? Ophelia: I was taken by the quality of the light and how the sun would light up the mountains in the evening, illuminating the textures of the snowless landscapes. I also found the flora was very different to where we live [in Northland]. I loved seeing apple trees on the streets, bramble bushes, crocuses and an abundance of wild roses. HOME + Gerard Roofs Architect Bob Burnett's clients wanted a comfortable, warm home, incorporating energy efficient design ideas. "The Japanese architectural philosophy for space planning is economical and detailed, interior spaces flow from one to another without the need for long hallways. An understated and slightly mysterious feel from the south facing street side is due to minimal windows and an outdoor walkway/ atrium leading to the hidden entry door," Bob explains. Clerestory windows above the kitchen dining and entry with vertical cedar battens allows pleasant filtered light to penetrate deep into the building and assists passive solar performance. HOME + Sto Mood and texture More than ever, walls are being used as a central, albeit often beautifully subtle, design element within interior spaces. A particularly versatile interior render system by Sto was specified in two of the 2023 Home of the Year finalists: Ivy Box in Queenstown by Yoke, and Allum Street House by Dorrington Atcheson Architects. The finished aesthetic is strikingly different in each house, articulating the design freedom the product allows, and an elegant way to create the look of concrete. In Ivy Box apartments, Stolit® Milano offers a light texture that is enhanced as the light is drawn in during the day, and different at night with interior lighting. These words were used by late Italian designer Vico Magistretti in an interview with The New York Times in 1989 to describe his work. His ethos and incredible pieces remain truly contemporary today. Pictured here is his Maralunga sofa, a piece that speaks to the extraordinary ability he had to fuse simplicity with essentialism. The Maralunga introduced the idea of an adjustable-height backrest, achieved by an avant-garde mechanism, patented by Cassina. The back cushion unfolds and moves upwards to form a headrest, providing ultimate comfort and flexibility. In 2014, to celebrate Maralunga’s 40th anniversary, Cassina undertook a further restyling, making the fabric upholstery removable for cleaning, while adding details such as the edge stitching that confers a more contemporary look to a design classic. HOME + Dimond Roofing Being surrounded by nature is not only a luxury, but also a necessity. This couldn’t be more aligned with a house at Lake Hāwea designed for a family from Taihape who wanted a place to connect, reunite and relax. The resulting dwelling, known as The View House, is a place of character and joy; spaces designed for multiple generations to gather together, each room capturing a different view of the alpine environment, and open spaces that can be enjoyed year round. Lake Hāwea is the ninth largest lake in New Zealand. The area is known for its cold, wet winters and warm summers. The average annual temperature at Lake Hāwea is just 10.5°C. GREEN HOME OF THE YEAR 2023 The stunning, winding 30km road from Upper Hutt through the Remutaka Ranges is dominated by beech trees, podocarps (at lower altitudes), and kamahi. It's a breathing mass of greens that — on closer inspection — is composed of dozens of other colours that range from white, through to reds, and back to browns and black. At the end is Featherston, a sleepy little enclave that once had a dubious reputation but is now quickly gentrifying with land prices (and, apparently, a high number of bookstores) reflecting this. Last page Award-winning Auckland-based food photographer Manja Wachsmuth's work is direct, evocative, and beautiful. Behind the seeming simplicity of her vivid images is an artistic narrative that underscores both her professional and personal projects. Over the past few years, the latter have become more of a focus for Manja whose experience of the pandemic meant interrupted ties with family and friends in Denmark. The garden city's annual festival of architecture is back for 2023, with its largest programme to date, spanning residential, commercial and civic buildings, along with guided and audio tours. This year, the festival is incorporating a celebration of the work of one of New Zealand's most significant architectural partnerships, that of Sir Miles Warren and Maurice Mahoney, with a range of buildings that capture the development of their practice, from the Dorset Street Flats through to their later work, the Christchurch Town Hall and College House. The programme also takes a closer look at Christchurch's coastal identity, with a particular focus on the Brighton area, including historic and contemporary design approaches such as the New Brighton Surf Life Saving Club (pictured). Comparing Vishmi’s artwork to a lusciously decorated birthday cake, or even a complex Sri Lankan curry, would not be entirely wrong. Their colourful and layered paintings use a thick combination of acrylics, pigments and mediums squeezed out of a piping bag — like one would decorate a cake — and onto a rich matrix of dots to create a delicious impasto. The artist's fascination for food-like treatment of paint began when they worked as a chef and, while plating, they realised how to merge both passions. "The table brings people together, everyone's physically levelled. CITY HOME OF THE YEAR 2023 An imposing form rests above Forbury Hill in the sophisticated little enclave of St Clair in Dunedin. From a distance, it reveals itself as a monolith, a 'Dunedin black' object that, although sizable, is not entirely excessive in the enormity of the views here. "I try to stick out a bit," says its colourful owner — art patron and collector Jan Warburton — with a grin. The house is nestled into the site to account for height restrictions, and it is shaped, twirled, and oriented to take in different aspects of the site, slivers of the city, and of the expansive ocean beyond it. MULTI-UNIT HOME OF THE YEAR 2023 About 20 years ago, Lynda Hensman used to walk her dog along Park Street, which runs along the shore of Lake Wakatipu leading east away from central Queenstown. It was during these walks that she developed a fondness for what is now her art gallery and studio, The Ivy Box, so named for the ivy and Virginia creeper the former owners of the building planted that eventually covered the whole building.
