It's hard to believe that, as we are sending this issue to print, we are nearing the end of 2022. This year has been a busy — and very enjoyable — one for our team. We've been to houses all over the country — from those of the smallest scale to those of grand proportions. We’ve seen homes crafted by hand, utilising found materials, and those on rugged and remote sites that operate entirely off the grid. We've visited urban and suburban abodes, and coastal and alpine cribs. Despite their diversity in form, scale, and intention, each has a commonality; they are all houses that speak to what it means to live in New Zealand — perhaps those words may revolve around a specific site and place; perhaps they talk…

DESIGN:02 Part milking stool, part garden tool, the Spade chair is the latest in a collection now available in New Zealand by Please Wait to be Seated. It harks back to the English rural tradition and an agricultural economy interleaved with everyday life. Its designer, British-born Faye Toogood, rejects the sentimental views of the countryside in favour of a celebration of hard-wearing functionality. DESIGN:05 Hidden Layers, by Hungarian designer Anna Weszelovszky, was the winner of the inaugural Architecture category and the People's Choice award at this year's World of WearableArt competition and show, which took place in Wellington 1-16 October. "Architecture and fashion are fundamentally based on art and share common concepts of art, science, and technology," says Heather Palmer, competition director at World of WearableArt, when asked about the impetus for adding an Architecture category to the event this year. "Designers were invited to create a work of wearable art inspired by architecture; the lines, shapes, scale, patterns, and structure to create inventive forms to wear on the moving body." 123 Halsey Public meets private at '132 Halsey’ by Athfield Architects. Apartments are arranged around a courtyard that interfaces with the inner-city Auckland street network on three sides of the development via a series of openings and walkways, while commercial tenancies connect with this space to provide an activated and porous public realm. HomeGround Auckland City Mission Te Tāpui Atawhai is a home on an epic scale, providing shelter for our most vulnerable people via an inspiring reimagination of the Prince of Wales tavern by Stevens Lawson Architects. The end result remakes its immediate surroundings, with references to traditional gabled forms, woven textures, and technologies of Te Ao Māori and the Pasifika. It was a trip to Sri Lanka that inspired the creation of this country home. The owners, Simon and Liz, visited that country in 2014 and were taken with the architecture of tropical modernism maestro, Geoffrey Bawa. Years later, they met with their architect, Wendy Shacklock, to see what she might design to put in a paddock they'd purchased in Tāwharanui, north of Auckland. Shacklock had also been to Sri Lanka and seen the best of Bawa's groundbreaking architecture. "It was great that we had Sri Lanka in common — I understood," says Shacklock. "[Bawa's] work is crosscultural; beautiful houses that are about being in the landscape. Rocks and things are brought into the houses, which was groundbreaking in his time." There’s an alluring charm about Poppie Pack's work. There's also a sense of ambiguity, and that's something the Sydney-based Kiwi creative loves exploring. A designer by trade, and formerly a foundation designer at Canva, 38-year-old Poppie had always seen photography as a passion project. That was until a year or so ago when she wandered past a vacant boutique space in Paddington. The new studio and gallery, nestled in between a fashion designer and a florist, resonates with the ambiguity of Poppie's work. Exposed brick on one side meets steel joinery, and on the other a more gallery-like white wall. DESIGN:18 Wedged between bush and sea, this Coromandel home is devised as a place of quiet; a place to bunker down, a place to escape to - and a place from which to enjoy the outdoors. It's a home of enduring simplicity, achieved by craft and detailing. With rooms that open completely to the outdoors, and each area connected to the next by an elemental material palette. The elemental nature of this house begins outside where a concrete wall was poured by hand, layer after layer. Homeground: The Story of a Building that Changes Lives By Simon Wilson Massey University Press, $65 This book's foreword begins: "The true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members". The oft-quoted sentence by Mahatma Gandhi is an apt preamble to this monograph about the new Auckland City Mission building, which serves as accommodation for the homeless and incorporates several support services into one facility. The book looks not just at the architecture — by Stevens Lawson Architects — but at the myriad incredible humans and organisations that banded together to bring to fruition this monument to goodwill, this well-oiled machine that supports the city's most vulnerable. After creating organic versions of each component of the noble Negroni, East Block 200 gin, hibiscusinfused L’Opera, and a deeply rich red Rubis vermouth, this duo have created something special, recently releasing their Barrel Aged Negroni, a complex aperitif aged in French oak. Hastings Distillers co-founder Kate, who — like partner David — has a background as a wine-maker, says that, while ageing wine in oak is relatively commonplace, crafting spirits in this way is less well understood. “We are one of only a handful of distillers worldwide ageing their Negroni, and there are very few who are doing so using their own handcrafted products. Trinity Hill has just taken home the Wine of the Show at the 2022 Hawke’s Bay Bayleys Wine Awards for their 125 Gimblett Chardonnay 2021. Earlier this year, the 2020 vintage of this wine was also awarded one of only 20 trophies by the International Wine and Spirits Challenge 2022. Trinity Hill was the only New Zealand winery represented, and their Chardonnay was the only one to be selected by the judges for a trophy, an incredible endorsement with over 4,000 wines in total tasted during the challenge. DESIGN:13 This beautiful light-filled store in a Spanish Mission loft in Hawke’s Bay is an experience; a space of inspiration. From the subtle scents and lush greenery of the florist corner to the carefully chosen furniture and soft furnishings, Madisons is a bit like walking into a perfectly curated home. Led by creative director Amber Wallace, the Madisons interior styling and design team has been steadily growing over the years. It now offers specialised services in interior and spatial design and styling for projects in Hawke’s Bay and beyond. A natural extension to interiors saw the opening of a new, purpose-built studio meaning custom curtains, cushions, and textiles can be crafted in-house for a truly bespoke experience. Beach Barn This light-filled home in Sumner, Christchurch, bears no resemblance to its former self — a leaky 1990s house that had seen better days. Transformed by C Nott Architects and Alex Fulton Design, the dwelling now sports a gabled form, quirky design features, and an interior bursting with vibrant colour and élan. Town House This project by Guy Tarrant Architects was recognised by the judges for its careful restoration and reconfiguration of an existing pair of townhouses. With the extension of the ground floor to provide generous living spaces, and the addition of a northern courtyard and a pool, this Auckland residence has become a modern, inner-city sanctuary. DESIGN:16 "Every moment of light and dark is a miracle," wrote Walt Whitman, and the quotation is borne out in almost every space in this 188m2 Auckland home. Designed by Peta Davy of Yellowfox and built by Waller Projects, the house balances hard, unforgiving surfaces with soft fabrics, and dark hues with calm neutrals. There's very little in between, and that was the homeowners' wish from inception. "The clients are very tidy and like a minimalist aesthetic, but they didn't want their spaces to be too sterile," says Davy, design studio manager at Yellowfox Auckland. "They wanted a black kitchen with timber accents, to warm the coolness of the concrete flooring, and they requested high-quality fitting and finishes." DESIGN:19 Located at the southernmost edge of the Auckland region, this Pukekohe villa has some interesting tales to tell. The former Pukekohe Police Station (circa 1900s), it was relocated in the '60s, renovated around 2014, and bought in 2019 by Michael Murray — of kitchen design specialist firm Michael Murray Studio — and his partner, who had been living in Hamilton. Michael’s purchase resulted from a perfect storm: the former owner had already bought another property, the market was not being generous to the old villa, and Michael and his partner made what he calls a cheeky offer, which was accepted. "We never thought that we would be able to afford to buy a villa of this size and with the amount of grounds that it has," says Michael. Instead…

When Ben, now 40, had his skateboard confiscated at high school, it began a set of circumstances that would shape his life and career. The day it was returned to him by the school's deputy principal, she also handed him some forms and asked that he fill them out there and then. "I did, and didn't really think much about it.
