It’s always interesting considering what makes something ‘green’. In this issue, we explore a range of different design and construction methodologies that, while very different, each attend to the concept in their own way. Some utilise natural materials — a rammed earth house in the desertlike landscape of Ophir (pg 96) is a great example of this — while others focus on size and scale. In order for bathroom design to truly reflect the individual personalities of our clients as well as the surrounding environment and architectural nuances of the space, it is important, in our view, to reject trends in favour of creating spaces that transcend a point in time. There is a growing desire in the industry for interiors especially bathrooms - to tie back to the landscape with products that use authentic and natural materials, and in doing so, to allow the architectural form of the space to be enhanced. Texture provides interest, and this can be seen in materials that have an inherent natural variation through colour, tone and shape. In Detail Ophir Homes of earth With more than 70 rammed-earth builds around New Zealand to its credit, Down to Earth Building is one of the most experienced operators in that specific form of highly tactile and textural construction. We spoke to its owner and main craftsman, Jimmy Cotter, about one of the company’s most recent projects, Ophir House by Nott Architects. Jimmy Cotter of Down to Earth Building has been perfecting the craft of rammed-earth construction for close to 30 years now. The process, he says, involves sets of formwork — ply sheets — held together with pipe clamps. You shot a project for us in Nelson for this issue (page 44); what struck you about this space and its surrounds? DESIGN: 06 On a slight bend in the road on a Remuera street, a 1950s house has been transformed slowly over two decades. The latest, and final, stage of a cleverly considered renovation delivers a symbiotic street-facing facade that incorporates an in situ concrete garage — bunker-like in form — covered in a 40m2 flowering green roof. Referencing the horizontal weatherboards of the original house, the formwork allowed for a nod to the old while introducing a new element to the site, replacing a carport that ultimately shielded the view of the house from the street. DESIGN: 11 A site like this isn’t for the faint-hearted. There are the prevailing southerly winds, and the only neighbours are those flying in from Zealandia Wildlife Sanctuary, with which this home shares a boundary. The nature of Long Gully Station, just beyond the Brooklyn wind turbine high in the hills above Wellington, offered a secluded slice of paradise for a couple who had recently sold their Brooklyn bungalow with the intention of building a home with more space and a connection to the outdoors. From up here, the views are unmatched. To the west, the site looks down on Port Nicholson through to the Hutt Valley; to the south, the white peaks of the Kaikoura Ranges pinch the horizon. DESIGN: 14 “I think landscape shouldn't be an offset of architecture,” explains Auckland designer Andy Hamilton. “It should provide, in some cases, a counterpoint to it, and in doing so find a contrast that enriches the design integrity of both the landscape and the architecture.” Andy, you see, is somewhat of a philosopher and a craftsman when it comes to greenery. He is experienced — having collaborated with Studio Mumbai, Tom Stuart-Smith, Fearon Hay Architects, and Patterson Associates — and equally opinionated. “A garden full of clipped hedges that just echo the fenestration of the building is — who cares? “Bathrooms have moved from a utilitarian kind of space to something a little bit more up-market. The bathroom is one of the few spaces in our homes where we can be alone. With open plan living and working from home, it’s one of the few sanctuaries left in our homes,” Sonya explains. In response to this new context within which the bathroom finds itself, vanities are becoming more and more like furniture. To achieve that, traditional rectangular shapes were discarded for elements with a depth of character, texture, and a sense of movement and curves. “We’ve seen the view across the valley through a mist of topsoil as the wind blows it off the newly ploughed fields in spring,” write Gary Stewart and Veronica Alkema, of the site above the township of Ophir in Central Otago where they built this home, “but it is, more often than not, so calm here that not even a blade of grass moves. For hours.” This is, however, a land of extremes. Ten years ago, photographer Virginia Woolf stood at the terminus of Fox Glacier. This year, she returned to find that was no longer possible. Standing in the same place as she did a decade ago, she could see the face of the glacier kilometres away in the distance, the only way to access it now via helicopter. “This is something that is happening around the world, and it’s something that is the visible face of climate change. I don’t think we can stop it, but we can slow it,” she says. Determined to record the fate of our glaciers, Virginia is following research teams on field trips, supported by funding from the Australasian Canon Masters programme.
