In his first solo show at the Bergman Gallery, Auckland, multimedia artist Telly Tuita presents a suite of new work, underscoring his trademark use of unabashed colour, genre mutation, and found materials.
The exhibition, Tongpop Cornucopia, sparks a compelling narrative; interconnecting and mashing cultural myths and histories. Dolly Parton and Dora the Explorer are compared with Greek gods; ancient Tongan goddess Hikule'o is omnipresent throughout the works.
“Underneath all the razzle-dazzle, I continue to push the capacity and complexity of my work, always telling a story — of us, them, you, and me; after all, isn’t it all autobiographical in the end?“ Telly says.
