Home of the Year is a collaborative programme now in its 27th year. It wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our 2022 award partners: BMW, Dryden, Dulux, James Hardie, Peter Fell, and Studio Italia. Thank you for your unwavering support. And a huge thank you also to our event partners: Designer Rugs, Citizen, and Jules Taylor Wines. This issue is a celebration of the 2022 Home of the Year winners, a rich and diverse group of projects that deliver excellence, joy, and innovation. These are homes that describe what it means to live in New Zealand in 2022 and what is possible when design dares to be bold and intrepid. It has been quite the journey visiting each of the finalists, first for judging and then to photograph,…
Emma Smales You photographed The Treehouse, the 2022 Small Home of the Year, for this issue. What stood out to you most about this project? That it is so small and humble, sitting next to the epic and majestic landscape of Mount Taranaki. It’s quirky and fun; you are literally up amongst the trees. What excites you most about your work at the moment? Exploring all the different possibilities of photographing a building and pulling together a collection. The Treehouse could be described as a tiny house, an artist’s retreat, or a unique guest house; what do you appreciate most about small spaces? It’s all yours, to be you. I live in a tiny house, and it feels as if it is protecting and nurturing. Camille Khouri For this issue,…
New Zealand design will be exhibited on the world stage when six local designers — Resident, Citta, James Dunlop Textiles, David Trubridge, Noho, and Nodi — showcase a curation of furniture, lighting, and textiles at San Francisco Design Week. The exhibition will reference inspirational elements emblematic of New Zealand’s vast natural landscape, relaying stories of our way of life, and focusing on the importance of the protection of the natural world through sustainable design. The San Francisco design community will be hosted by the brand founders for an intimate and relaxed design experience, highlighting New Zealand’s unique perspective on interiors and design. “This initiative is a deliberate progression from the traditional trade fair concept, through which we aim to illuminate our creativity and ingenuity, and, most importantly, share it with…
Shannon Novak’s installation Bridge Between Worlds has filtered its colours throughout Auckland’s Britomart. With Love I, which is on display in the main foyer of the PWC building, is a recreation of the various flags in the rainbow community, inclusive of circular forms that represent people and groups coming together in support of each other. With Love II is located in the HSBC Tower, and With Love IV can be found at Jarden House. Novak’s work has been exhibited widely in Australia, most recently in Queensland, where his installation entitled Someone You Know formed part of the 10th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT10) at the Queensland Art Gallery. shannonnovak.com…
In an exploration of pattern and light, ADesignStudio’s new hand-blown glass crackle wall lights introduce radiant shadows and light in expressive dappled hues. Embodying the skill and artistry of centuries-old glassblowing techniques, each piece offers an individual sculptural effect. Armed with LED technology, the lamp inside is concealed, while light radiates through. The result is reminiscent of the traditional flame lamp, modernised in an exploration of the interplay of illumination and materiality. ADesignStudio’s glass crackle lights are available from Light Establishment. lightestablishment.com…
