It was well before the latest lockdown that we decided on an overarching theme for this issue: we wanted to explore our cities and how residential design is shaping and defining how we live in urban — and suburban — environments, often on sites carved from others, and in buildings of verticality where a synergy and delineation between community and privacy is paramount. Travel intent Playing on the idea that New Zealand has a strong connection to temporary, quickly erected structures into which to place objects or events of particular significance — the marquee in Busby’s front lawn that was crucial to the Treaty of Waitangi; the multitude of canvas or plastic tents that are synonymous with Christmas, and so on — the team behind the Aotearoa Art Fair has launched a daring new initiative called Tent. The three-day event hopes to take galleries and artists out of their geographical comfort zone and into temporary, pop-up venues across the country. The long-weekend extravaganza is scheduled to have an “accompanying programme of special events, curated walks, chances to meet artists, and more”, according to organisers. The art of storytelling Everyone has a unique story, and contemporary artist Andrew J. Steel retells his clients’ personal narratives on their walls. Photographer Mary Gaudin explored the event for HOME — and encountered an exhibition of design where circularity and sustainability prevailed. DESIGN:17 Flying into Queenstown is a surreal experience. The proportions, shapes, shadows, textures, and colours combine to create a sense of utter wonder. All this unfolds in a single moment, a single feeling. “It is this moment we set out to capture in our interior,” Undercurrent’s founder and interior designer Olivia Macfarlane explains. “This moment brings to mind the snow globe — an iconic artefact of childhood that, when shaken, opens the door to a whole new world. We strived for a bold aesthetic, verging on biophilic surrealism, in a bid to recreate that moment of childlike wonder, sensed with a glance to the Southern Alps or the shake of a snow globe.” The client had one request, Olivia explains, and that was to avoid whites, neutrals, and grey tones.…

A brick-and-tile on a quarter-acre section was what working-class dreams were made of in the 1950s. In the Auckland suburb of Westmere, where trams still trundled along the main street, the epitome of living well was a freshly mown lawn and a Ford Prefect parked up in the single-car garage to take out for a Sunday drive. For five years, the current owners of this land toyed with upgrading the existing state house to meet the full potential of the site. They completed due diligence and budgeted. The singular, modernist box was not part of their language; they wanted variation in volumes and materials “I refused to spend a dollar until we had a plan,” says one. From the street, this elegant white house looks like a close cousin of its neighbours. Two peaked gables and a verandah with a bull-nosed roof give a shout-out to the surrounding villas. But all is not as it seems. Not only is this home in Freemans Bay, Auckland, brand new but, like an iceberg, only a small proportion can be seen. When owner Simon Dunlop bought this corner site, he knew the rambling 1880s house that stood on it was a local icon. “We couldn’t have bowled it, and I didn’t want to,” he says. Dulux’s annual colour forecast is a highly anticipated unveiling of what colours are most likely to permeate our daily lives in the year ahead. For 2022, it has selected a range that paints the future with optimism, calm, and boldness of expression. Here is HOME’s selection of images from the latest forecast. Slow and steady DESIGN:01 Although somewhat delayed by recent lockdowns, Queenstown’s purveyors of homewares Slow Store are expected to open an Auckland showroom. DESIGN:09 The Residents: Made in Wellington By Lucy Revill Lucy Revill has been interviewing and photographing Wellington and its inhabitants for well over five years for her popular blog: The Residents. Late last year she turned that passion for finding the most emblematic and sometimes ‘off the beaten path’ humans from the Windy City towards turning their tales into book form. BMW New Zealand’s managing director, Karol Abrasowicz-Madej, is a big and detailed picture kind of guy. DESIGN:18 On the shores of Sydney Harbour, New Zealand-born Australian architect Richard Archer devised a home of connections with the water and city beyond – the ever-moving seascape by day, and at night the vast black expanse of water framed by city lights – and a retreat from the same. Located in Point Piper in the city’s eastern suburbs, the site faces north west towards the central business district. A full renovation of an existing four-storey 1980s house was undertaken, as well as a complete landscape redesign in which mature trees were delivered to the site by barge to create an instant tropical green belt around the property.
