A new exhibition at Auckland’s Lightworx Gallery by Artbay showcases a collection of enigmatic pieces of geometric reflected neon forms.
Drawn to the aesthetic and metaphorical qualities of light, neon in particular, one of New Zealand’s leading contemporary Māori artists, Professor Robert Jahnke, of Ngāi Taharora, Te Whānau a Iritekura, Te Whānau a Rakairoa o Ngāti Porou, is primarily a sculptor.
Professor Jahnke’s work is often based on political issues that face Māori, the relationship between Māori and European colonisers, and the impact of Christianity on Māori culture.
The distinctive cross form, a central feature of the works in Jahnke’s current collection at Lightworx Gallery by Artbay, references the basic stitch in tukutuku weaving, and the building block for kaokao patterns, both of which play a metaphorical role in te Ao Māori.…
