New Nordic Houses

Sure, the context is Nordic, where climate heavily influences material choices, but little is lost in translation. Interpretation into our own vernacular is loud and clear. Rain screens, timber cladding, ply lining, folding roof lines, barn-style dwellings that are essentially wrapped when not in use, natural materials and palettes, and the dissolution of solid boundaries are familiar territory. Remarkable settings – inlets, islands, forests, pastures – and respect for context are also relatable. From alpine cabin to summer house, designs allow ample opportunity for the landscape to enthral.
There are homes in all seasons, big budgets, modest budgets, off-grid and not, big names (Snøhetta, CF Moller, Saunders) and lesser-known. The overwhelming majority of homes have been completed in the last seven years, the oldest in 2006.…
